Re: The Hossenfeffer Bass

Haven't updated this in a while, long enough that all my Photobucket links tanked. Like many people, I wasn't about to go from a free hosting service to a ridiculously expensive one on short notice, kind a scummy maneuver by Photobucket. Anyway...... Finished the bass, sorry for the slightly blurry ...

Re: The Hossenfeffer Bass

Time for the "Full-Dress" mockup prior to final sanding. I had to relieve the 7/8" holes drilled for dual output jacks a bit, the stereo jack is a pretty tight fit. Looks good so far, but I won't know if anything is shorting out until I wire it up at the end. http://i162.photobucket.c...

Re: My Rickenbacker 650D copy

Nice Job! I always liked that body shape, been thinking about a short-scale bass build using that design. What did you use for clearcoat?

Re: The Hossenfeffer Bass

First Nut Job (No bad jokes, please) This is an OEM Rickenbacker bakelite pre-slotted nut. I like the material, it's very hard and kind of waxy, but it takes a nice polish. I was shooting for .022" clearance from top of first fret to bottom of unfretted string, which would theoretically leave a...

Re: The Hossenfeffer Bass

Per the suggestions, went back and got the fret crowns much thinner with a combination of file and sanding stick, as thin as I dared without scratching the fret tops. http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t266/Gilmourisgod1/IMG_5667_zps1rswc5az.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t266/Gilmourisgod1/...

Re: The Hossenfeffer Bass

Thanks for comments. I suspected I needed to go farther in narrowing the line, I'll keep working them finer. I've seen that technique with grooving a piece of wood before, the sanding stick actually has a notch filed in the tip already, they are also available with no notch in case you want to file ...

Re: The Hossenfeffer Bass

Frets leveled with 320 grit, also went over them a couple passes with 600 grit to get some of the scratches out. I got this set of crowning tools cheap on Ebay, and it shows, had to polish up the "safe" edges of the three corner files a little before use, a bit crudely ground. Otherwise th...

Re: 5 String Bass Build

Is that one of those new "compression" flushcut spiral bits? I've been looking for something that won't tearout like a straight bit. How do you like it?

Re: The Hossenfeffer Bass

What ever you do now Alexander, I can guarantee you that the fret plane will look different in a year or two's time so don't be surprised if you have to do the fret leveling all over again as the neck wood gives in gradually to the continuous strain of string tension and the slightly imbalanced str...

Re: The Hossenfeffer Bass

OK.... So anybody interested in building a Vinson clone of the Stewmac neck jig may find this interesting, if not, a real yawner. I found the 2x4 beam suggested in the Vinson plans is just not stiff enough, so I glued and screwed on a 3/4" plywood piece, seemed to really make it rigid. I also f...

Re: The Hossenfeffer Bass

At this point, I feel like ive got nothing to lose by trying to make to pre cut nut work, if its a bust, I'm out a few bucks. Given how crazy tall this is, I figured on taking some meat off the bottom first to get into the ballpark before I file the slots any deeper. I CA glued the strip of brass th...

Re: The Hossenfeffer Bass

Couldn't find a reamer anywhere local, so I just dew a 17/32" circle around my 1/2" holes as a guide to keep things circular, and went at it with a tapered round rasp a tiny bit a t a time until I got a firm thumb-press fit on the bushings. http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t266/Gilmouris...

Re: The Hossenfeffer Bass

Regarding the tuner holes - I used to drill two step holes, then decided there was no reason to have to do this. The post is supported by the gears inside the tuner, and by the bushing in the peg head. Unless the smaller hole is absolutely concentric and of perfect diameter, it offers no additional...

Re: The Hossenfeffer Bass

Bridge set with 3 out of five screws. Hope I did this right: 33.25" scale, so 16-5/8" from nut to 12th, 16-5/8" from 12th to knife edge on G string saddle. I set the G saddle as far forward as it would go, then backed it off 4 turns to leave about 3/32" of travel towards nut. htt...

Re: The Hossenfeffer Bass

I noticed that you are planning a rattle-can lacquer finish. I did three projects with rattle-can acrylic lacquer, and after a few years the finish has started to pick up stuff. It mars where it sits on a guitar stand, the strap sticks to it, a fabric rag burns into it and fibers embed into it. Not...

Re: Carbon Fiber Reinforcement

My current build is a Ric 4001bass tribute build, all Ric basses have two trussrods. I havent seen any real problems with two trussrods as far as neck stability, but I wanted to avoid the big truss rod adjustment pocket and no volute inherent to the standard Ric design. Its a real weak point in the ...
