Re: fipple flute making - step by step

Thank you for your reply. The starting hole tool looks a lot bigger in the photos. I can't wait to try what i learned from your tutorial. The video is also great, any others with the rest of the process will be very apreciated, if you have the time to film yourself working. Can i get your email for ...

Re: How to dry/season wood for flute-making?

That is ehat i was thinking. I will seal the end because i use mostly branches so i don't have a lot of material to work around cracks.

Re: fipple flute making - step by step

I have a few questions. for you. What diameter is the chisel you are using for starting the bore and how much you go inside with it (how deep is the starting hole)? In the pictures the chisel used for starting the hole looks like it have a bigger diameter than the D Bit, doesn't this make the D Bit ...

Re: How to dry/season wood for flute-making?

So bore the wood with the final diameter or a smaller one and ream it after it is dry? I imagine that after drying the bore will deform a little bit.

How to dry/season wood for flute-making?

Hello, i want to collect some fruit tree wood (plum, apricot, cherry, apple, walnut, etc) for making some folk flutes. How should i dry itand for how long? I've read that i should seal the ends with paint or wax to prevent cracking. I have also read that some flute makers make a lime treatment to the w...

Re: What bit to use for boring?

Hello again :) How safe and precise do you think this method of boring is?: 2:10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVcq0mnXGDY 0:59 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3PnuobYNGA Now i am designing a lathe with a steady device that will allow me to bore the wood like Yuri does in the fipple making tutori...

Re: Metal "ring" on the flute. How to make it?

Yes it is very thin. I saw some turkish videos about Ney and Dilli Kaval making, bit they used what it looks like silver sheet that they soldered before mount it on tje flute. On my Caval (romaniam kaval) it looks like it's folded somehow...

Re: Metal "ring" on the flute. How to make it?

Here in Romania is hard to get those kind of things in small quantities.
I could get copper pipe easily but i think that it can be too thick. I will need to make a groove in the wood to make it flush.

Metal "ring" on the flute. How to make it?

Hello, I attached some pictures of my romanian caval where you can see a metal ring that keeps the part where the two pieces unite from spliting. Do you have any idea about how that ring is made? It looks like it is made from a pice of metal sheet, but i don't know how the two ends are clamped toghe...

Re: What bit to use for boring?

I know how it should look, but i can't find one here.
I made a Caval from PVC pipe. but i still want to make a wooden one. The auger from the first post doen't work, it is very hard to bore straight due to his screw tip.

Thanks, but i didn't found anything about calculating the length for a specific base note (pitch). My Caval has 5 holes and a fipple.

I made a Romanian Kaval-how should i tune it?

Here it's called Caval and is made out of plum wood or other fruit tree wood. I made it from a PP-R pipe (water pipe) because i couldn't drill such a long piece of wood. I sounds like a Caval, but it isn't in tune. What are the formulas for calculating the length of the tube for a given scale (A or ...

Re: fipple flute making - step by step

Thanks you for the tutorial. I want to make a romanian caval from plum wood, that needs a almost square window. Do you think that i could drill a big hole and file down the corners of the window? I don't have carving knifes, i have to search for some old files and make my own knifes like you. The la...

Re: What bit to use for boring?

I want to use plum wood because this is the favorite wood for this instrument. If you don't have a lathe, you can drill a block of hardwood about 2" thick and then clamp it a guide. Can you explain better that last part? I can't understand what you are trying to say, sorry. Aslo, wouldn't a auger li...

What bit to use for boring?

Hello guys, i am trying to make a romanian caval (http://www.eliznik.org.uk/RomaniaMusic/cavals.htm) from plum wood, but i don't have a lathe. What drill bit can i use for this? I can buy some cheap wood augers like in the picture attached. Do you think that i could make it with it? Would i be able ...
