Re: Jumbo 6 string by Patrick Degreve

Yeah, I really like the look of the 3-piece back and the laminated neck. Great continuity.

Re: Chuck Tweedy's Shop

Just found this post... I'm drooling Chuck, totally drooling at your space and organizational skills. My shop is a disaster on both counts. If you're ever out on the East Coast, come help me get it right!

Re: tools for a new builder: hand, stationary, or CNC?

Like Andy, I have a CNC that I've been using for a couple of years now. Mostly I'm doing work for others, but more recently I've had an opportunity to use it for some of my own work. There are things it can do that are very cool, and it would take a master craftsman to achieve the same results. Ther...

Re: What would you do with a really old redwood beam

Interesting read this thread. I have some redwood tops that are light as a feather, and yet ring for ages, and very very stiff both directions. They're almost too good to be true, and easily are better than the LS set I have. Redwood can be crazy good stuff...or really bad too.

Re: StewMac Japanese Fine Cut Saw

In the FWIW Department: I had the chance to try it out last night in fitting the top to the rim on my current project, a Brazilian/Adi OM. (I know, terrible, unproven combo...it will probably never work) and the saw performed admirably. My rating would be an 8 out of 10, only because as I said earli...

I wish it were that easy for an acoustic neck! Nice looking setup though.

Re: StewMac Japanese Fine Cut Saw

Thanks Steve. The StewMac saw seems kind of small to me for cutting a tenon, but after getting it, it seems just right for trimming brace ends when fitting plates to the rim. I think I like it, except that it is almost too light in weight. I wish it was a bit heavier, or had a heavier handle, or per...

Re: Finishing with a scraper as opposed to sandpaper...

I have had one of Al's scrapers for a couple years at least, and I keep it in my shop apron at all times. It's the best scraper I've ever had, and worlds better than my Lie-Nielson card scrapers. As to scraping vs sanding... In my humble opinion, and I think that of generations of fine woodworkers, ...

Re: Inlay Bits

Precisebits has great stuff, BUT.... on eBay, Drillman1 sells the same thing for less than 1/4 of the cost. Just sayin'
Well, they may not be *exactly* the same, but I find they work fantastic with my cnc, and the $aving$ is SO worth it.

StewMac Japanese Fine Cut Saw

Has anyone tried this? How do you like it, and have you compared to the Gyros 83-16008 Brass Back Razor Saw?

Thanks.

Re: Free CAD software for Windows 7?

It's not free, but BobCAD has come a long way and is a great integrated CAD/CAM package that you can usually buy for around $650 or so. I'm sure Alibre has better 3D stuff, and it's possibly parametric(?) which can be a big advantage. Still, BobCAD is a great value if you're a beginning cnc person o...

Re: Wood porn...

Mattia, One of the best sounding guitars I've ever heard is made from quilt sapele. In spite of the cardboard-like tap tone, when epoxy is used for sealing this stuff under a finish, it actually becomes decent. Arnt....nice stuff! The Pernambuco is nicer than a lot I've seen from certain other build...
