Re: Experimental sound post in an acoustic slimline guitar?

Andrew Porter wrote:Barry G. - What was the motivation to try the truss?

Andrew,

My motivation was to see if I could "deaden" the hollow sound that the mandolin initially produced. I had no idea if it would work, but it did.....increasing sustain and clarity.

Re: Freeze Drying

I posted this topic after talking to a woodworker at my local market day on Sunday, selling his beautiful work from a stall. His specialty is bowl turning. He told me he turns the bowl green, then "cures" the finished product by freezing as above until the wood is stabilized. I questioned ...

Freeze Drying

I searched the forum to see if this topic had been mentioned previously, but didn't find a single mention. My question is: has anyone tried drying timber by freezing? Seems that you freeze a piece in a plastic bag for three days, then remove the crystalizations that form, freeze it again repeating t...

Re: Feasibility of three-piece sides?

Was Galileo dumb to ask his fellow scientists and the Church to look through his telescope? They chose not to look because they already knew the answers, just like you. Sorry to be so blunt, but there is almost nothing in stringed instrument acoustics that cannot be challenged. The existence of the ...

Re: Feasibility of three-piece sides?

Barry's right, 3 piece sides are a bad idea. It will be more work and the result will probably not be as good. However, as an amateur building for yourself, you have the luxury of pursueing bad ideas. It can be made to work, but it won't be easy. You won't be able to use normal forms on a bender, a...

Re: Experimental Violin Part Two

Thanks Andy. The project is a bit stalled at the moment while we move house. However, when all settles down, the fifth prototype will be posted. Meanwhile, prototype #4 has been tested for frequency analysis by John McLennan. The two graphs show one test with the chinrest and one without. Barrry Gue...

Does anyone know about Fernando Del Perugia

The label reads "Premiato all Espos Di Torino 1898. Fernando Del Perugia Fece L'Anno 1909 No. 5316. Schmidl + Co. Trieste."

I wondering if anyone knows his work and what this instrument might be worth.

Re: Spiritus Sorsana made in Cuneo in 1732

Thanks Steve. I've got to say that I'm in total awe of this little box made of wood. It is almost 300 years old, and even though it looks beaten up when you get close to it, holding that sort of history in your hands is a feeling that is hard to explain. As you are probably aware, I am from Australi...

Sorry Steve, I didn't really answer your question. This violin has been changed to accommodate tension issues as stated above.

Re: Spiritus Sorsana made in Cuneo in 1732

Interesting!! Does this have the shorter neck or the odd neck angle of the earlier violins. Please educate me about the differences between the earlier violins and the more modern instruments. (besides being made in China)! No Steve, the neck wasn't necessarily shorter, but the fingerboard is much ...

The case is your run of the mill leather case, not the original. It has been kept in a cupboard since 1977. In fact, it is quite dirty and has a number of cracks.

Re: Spiritus Sorsana made in Cuneo in 1732

If you can find a copy of the book Four Centuries of Violin Making: Fine Instruments From the Sotheby's Archive by Cozio Publishing (http://www.cozio.com/Luthier.aspx?id=74), it apparently has at least a short biography. Brompton's Book of Violin and Bow Makers also lists a Joseph Sorsano in the 17...

Re: Spiritus Sorsana made in Cuneo in 1732

Looks like it was recently refinished or sprayed. Are you sure it's not a knock off? Barry, no, I think it's the real deal. Those photos don't tell the whole story, so here is a full frontal.....and back. It has not been re-finished. It has been in the one family for 120 years and they are now look...

Spiritus Sorsana made in Cuneo in 1732

sorsana1.jpg sorsana2.jpg I am doing a few things for the owner of this violin and I'm wondering if anyone has any information on Spiritus Sorsana's birth, death and history. The internet has precious little info on him other than a few sales in London and a recent sale at Christies that fetched $1...

Re: Experimental sound post in an acoustic slimline guitar?

Probably, but aren't you wondering just a little? Anyway, what's a "large violin" sound like? A flat guitar soundboard vibrates more and vibrates differently than an arched violin plate. Maybe I'm playing devil's advocate, but curiosity never hurt anyone but a cat!

Re: Experimental sound post in an acoustic slimline guitar?

I tried a soundpost before as well. In an a classical guitar. It certainly extended the sustain, but killed the richness in the tone of that guitar. It stops the top and back from moving independently, so the body can no longer "breathe". Hey Chuck, I wonder if the richness of tone could ...

Re: Experimental sound post in an acoustic slimline guitar?

Interesting to say the least! Was it mounted between the braces? Fitted to the curved surface of the back directly behind the bottom brace and fitted onto a flattened surface of the belly brace. What you can't see are three "half diameter" cutouts mirroring the bottom of the bridge....hid...
