Re: Thinking of making one for sale, considerations?

I "sold" my first few guitars for cost of material and told the buyers if they thought it was worth more, they were welcome to kick in a little something, you know, for the effort, you know? Nobody offered me total consciousness on my death bed yet, but so far, everyone has made me feel go...

Re: End graft advice, please

If you put some 120 or 220 grit sand paper on the back of the ruler, it will help prevent it from slipping while making your cuts. Cork is nice and wont damage the box, but the sand paper wont either unless you are sliding all over the place. Which you shouldn't because of the sand paper. Plus, this...

Re: Bog Oak

If it is hard, and I suspect it is, and dry, which can be arranged, it should make a fine fret board. If you can hear a tonal difference using the oak versus any other wood in the world, you win one internet. Especially plugged in. With effects. You could use concrete and it wont make a difference t...

Re: Wipe-on Poly. Is it usable?

I finish my necks with Danish oil followed by Minwax Wipe on Poly. I have also pore filled by sanding the Danish oil on the wood with 320 grit paper. Works fine and the Wipe on Poly gives a really smoot, glossy finish when done right. I can't access my Flickr account from work, but you can go to my ...

Re: Blood-red inlay fill needed. Recommendations?

Why not actually bleed on the FB and then seal that with lacquer? A little cut on a finger tip, a few flicks, and PRESTO!! Can't get more real than that. Of course, it will darken over time.....

Re: Weeding tools?

Most of the guys I know just use a tin can, poke a hole in the side, add some...oh...wrong kind of weed. Move along people...nothing to see here.

Well...since I stopped by, how do I keep the darn weeds out of my grass??

Well...lets see the end wedge!! It's tough to get them all perfect. I usually get three out of four very tight, but that last one....it always gets away from me!

Re: Construction materials

Tony, I guess I'm on the other side.... MIMF is a great forum that has done a huge amount of work to compile an extensive library for the very reason of answering these questions, novice to expert, up front! It should be USED! (For example, if you make the effort to at least go to the library &...

Re: Construction materials

I don't build arch tops, so I can't help you with this question, but I am sure the builder would explain why he did it if you ask him. Same with the other two guitars you are wondering about. Without pics, it is hard to tell you why he did what he did. But asking the builder would certainly be a goo...

Re: Construction materials

Learning is a lot easier when you can ask a question and have it answered. .......but a lot more meaningful and rewarding when you at least make the effort to research out the answer yourself, rather than have others do the work & spoonfeed it to you. Just different views on the value of educat...

Re: Construction materials

Let me see if I can help you with your questions: Hello, I am new here and have some basic questions. Are the tops and backs of acoustic (or semi-acoustic) guitars usually made of thin plywood or is it a single thin sheet of wood? I would expect plywood to be much stronger. It would be stronger and ...

Thanks Matthew! I forgot to mention that CBS Radio came over and interviewed me when I first started this project. The reporter is a guitar player and understood the importance of having a guitar and what it means to us as players. Here is a link to the story if anyone is interested: http://newyork....

Re: Trouble with Grain Filler

I have used Z-Poxy on 8 guitars and an ukulele with great success. I have also used TimberMate successfully as well. Timbermate is really fast because you can sand it in about 20 minutes. Z-Poxy has a long enough working time that you can get it into the pores pretty readily before it starts to gum ...

Giveaway Guitar for a Hurricane Sandy victim

Hey all, this is my first post here, so allow myself to.... introduce..... myself.....(as Austin powers said) I started building guitars a few years ago after the birth of my older son, who is now 6, and shortly afterwards, people began asking me to build them a guitar. So I did. Last year, in Octob...
