Re: Need help identifying this violin

I remember seeing one much like that in an old Montgomery Ward catalogue

Bridge for an five course electric Cittern

Well, you've been helpful figuring out the electronics for this creature but now I'm faced with the bridge. Ideally, I'd like to do something like maybe a Hotshot Hardtail (for example) so that the string heights, etc are adjustable. The problem being the ten strings. Again, ideally I'd like a strin...

Electric cittern electronics

I'm thinking of building a five course solid body electric cittern and I'm not having much luck figuring out the pickups. I was thinking maybe a five string bass pickup but not sure if it will handle the treble side very well. I'm thinking a standard guitar string length and a tuning something like ...

Re: Spiritus Sorsana made in Cuneo in 1732

It would appear that the peghead was spliced and from the photo even looks like a different piece of wood?

Re: My first two builds

Very pretty. I made a guitar with lacewood and like it. It can be tricky to bend but otherwise nice stuff

Re: harp string failure

Simon, It's a celtic style harp with 30 strings. I've compared the maker's suggestions with the string makers and they seem to be in agreement. The string lengths are appropriate for the style. The troublesome strings are the mono treble strings, maybe the frist six or seven. It was made by a Canadi...

Re: Cittern intonation problem

Thanks Mark, I htink you've hit it. I know about the capo thing in terms of fret buzz, etc but having thought it was the bridge I hadn't tried it but that seems to have worked. Nice one!

Cittern intonation problem

An anomoly has been bugging me. I've built two Irish style citterns, the first is a five course and the second a four course. I tune them like a mandolin and they have a guitar string length. I had to make the bridges since they both have more strings than a guitar and "think" I have been ...

Re: Bracing, to tuck or not

I'm not as professional as some of the other responders but I have made two acoustic guitars and have helped with two others. I've also made two Irish Citterns using a similar bracing. The oldest guitar is only 5 years old so it's not really a test of time just yet, but I try to tuck the "X&quo...

Re: harp string failure

Thanks guys. I'm thinking that the string guage might be wrong. When she bought the harp several of these strings were already broken so the maker might have misjudged the guage of the strings for this particular instrument

Re: harp string failure

They're breaking at the soundboard end. I questioned knot failure but they're the same as on my harps which have never failed. In fact, this is the second harp that I've worked on for her. The burr was my first thought but couldn't see any and I use the little felt thingys to try to prevent any of t...

harp string failure

Anyone know what might be causing repeated harp string failure. I'm trying to help a friend who's having some serious trouble keeping strings on the treble end. The strings are from a reputable manufacturer whose strings I use on my two harps and they have never failed. Totally stumped.
