Re: Instructions for using a chisel

I manned our NCWoodworker.net booth at a woodworking show and was shocked with the high percentage of the attendees missing digits. I loved hearing some of those people flat out refusing to even look at a Sawstop giving some vague, false story about how evil the company was. Many of the injuries wer...

Re: Random Orbit sander failure

I would look closer at the barbs on the interface pad. They can melt if you are heavy handed and using it for a prolonged period. I've ruined one while resurfacing a wooden deck. I've also ruined one using Abranet abrasive with it. The standard length barbs on sanders will get worn off because they ...

Re: Exasperatedly sanding cocobolo

Although it sounds counter-intuitive, try turning down the the suction on your shop vac if you have one connected to your power hand sander. Full suction can reduce the airflow by clamping the sanding pad tight against your workpiece, increasing heat and reducing the particle capture. I put a "...

Re: bandsaw blade question

Simon if you have a gas torch (propane, butane or map) using a 45% silver solder, paste flux and a diy blade holding jig made out of a short section of angle iron and 2 binder clips will serve you well if you plan to continue in the business. You can buy bulk band saw blade stock and make your own f...

Re: Old shellac flakes a problem?

Another twist I discovered is that Everclear now has a lower proof (ie higher water content) version on the shelves so read the label. I'm not a regular store visitor and my PJ drinking days are long ago so this may be old news. The original version thankfully is still available by special order in ...

Re: Help with D'Angelico plane

I've not used one of these planes but in this video it appears that the larger of the two planes is being used as a scrub plane and you need to really bear down hard on the front as you push. The smaller one is used to refine the tighter curves and not intended for course work. As my grandfather use...

Re: sharpening?

The blade on my peg shaver is held on by two end cap bolts, so the blade can be easily removed for sharpening with an Allen wrench. If your blade cannot be removed, you can use a variation on the Scary-Sharp sandpaper sharpening trick by getting some old pegs and gluing bands of various grits of sa...

Re: sharpening?

It looks like if you can remove the blades it can be done easily by hand. Or, cut a piece of thin board the size of a #4 plane iron and screw the blade to the end of it. Sharpen as you would a plane iron or wide chisel.

Re: Good countersink

Before spending any money, try cutting the countersink with your current countersink prior to drilling the through hole. I get much smoother countersinks this way.
