Re: Thinking of making one for sale, considerations?

It's been a while since I last reviewed this thread. I apologize for my poor outlook a few months ago, having a negative attitude never does advance the cause. I'm still not where I want to be as yet, it's certainly been a struggle, but after my first year I can look back and say I haven't lost mone...

New Hollow Body Bass project

Hey everyone, I'm starting of the year venturing into unfamiliar territory. I'm going to build a hollow body 4 string short scale Bass. It will be a variant of the hollow body electric guitars I was building last year in a 4 string, 32 inch scale configuration. It's still in the design and planning ...

Re: Piezo - MIDI Vulcan Harp?

Interesting idea, I thought that MIDI keyboard keys were basically on/off switches. Will the circuit carry analog (string tone) vibrations? I'm wanting to basically expand upon the Hexophonic guitar concept, having each string piezo on it's own channel and using MIDI synth to modify the acoustic str...

Piezo - MIDI Vulcan Harp?

I have a concept project I'm working on, a crazy notion but I think it should work if I can sort out the details. Question #1: How many separate feeds (strings) will typical MIDI software support? Question #2: Does the signal from a piezo sensor require processing through a circuit board or will MID...

Re: Body Woods

I would recommend you ask these folks about what your looking for. http://olegeneralstore.com/LumberPrices.html#f They supply me with the recovered cypress I use in a lot of my builds. You might even consider using cypress for your project as it has a similar appearance and is very light weight. htt...

Re: Wake me up, please. What are you working on?

The fingerboard is the cherry? Or is the cherry part of the neck proper and the fingerboard is something else? The fingerboard is Rosewood, the neck itself is a 1 inch stripe of cherry with heart cypress on either side. The neck is hand carved to '53 Boat neck specs, and the fretwork is PRS standar...

Re: Wake me up, please. What are you working on?

What I'm working on... I just finished a custom order hollowbody electric, with an L.R.Baggs T-Bridge & EQ-7545R Equalizer Pre-Amp. The guitar is made from recovered Florida Cypress, with a 3 layer laminated Heart Cypress & Cherry neck. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-YEIrSOP7Szc/UlREnF2A...

Re: Neck Angle and Bridge Height

Bear in mind that string height will also change as you bring them up to tension. I once thought I had a good neck angle/bridge height like that, but once I brought the strings up to tuning tension the action had raised up another 1/2 inch. Yes the T-rod does mitigate some of that, but not always. N...

Re: Ran into a situation last weekend...

I did try to explain to her, even gave her my contact info and told her I would meet her to pick it up. I just didn't want to babysit the thing in a busy craft show all day.

Ran into a situation last weekend...

Under the heading of "practical & political" issues, I had the following scenario... I'm tending a vendor booth at a local weekend arts & crafts market, I was approached by a woman who was carrying a treasured family heirloom. It was a very old hand crafted hourglass mountain dulci...

Re: Harvesting Osage Orange

Osage Orange is a beautiful wood, but like already said, it is hard on tools once it is dry. Here is a tip from my brother-in-law, which is a wood turner. Once you have the green wood cut into manageable shape, get yourself a washtub and full it with denatured alcohol. Fully immerse the wood in the ...

Re: Anybody have experience installing a L.R.Baggs T-Bridge?

The Ghost system looks promising for next time, but I already have the T-Bridge here. I'm just being a bit timid about jumping into wiring a $170 part for the first time.

Anybody have experience installing a L.R.Baggs T-Bridge?

I'm building a build to order Guitar, and the person specified a L.R.Baggs T-Bridge, and he wants it paired with an Equalizer Preamp. I'm wondering about joining all 6 leads to a single micro plug that will jack into the preamp. I don't have a soldering iron small enough to use the circuit board tha...

Re: Electric Cello Pickup Solutions.

This is brilliant... I just set up a test platform on my bench and tried it. I built a primitive diddly bo, and used a bolt for nut & bridge. I soldered a positive lead (red wire) to the bridge & a negative lead (black wire) to the nut. I gator clipped both wires to a EQ-7545R preamp and jac...

Re: Making money.

I'm very much right in the midst of this topic. I'm desperately struggling to get a luthier business off the ground, without much success. I don't really feel that I have many options at the moment though. I'm having extreme difficulty selling anything in the current market. If I do make a sale, it ...

Re: Single Coil mounting holes, I need a fix

I would like to be able to adjust the height of the pickup in relation to the string course, using the tension springs. Of course having alternatives is always nice. These old veteran coils should produce some very nice grungy blues.

Single Coil mounting holes, I need a fix

I have a collection of "vintage" single coil pickups that date from the 1960's to the 1990's that I recently bought in bulk through a local auction. These are all used pickups that were replaced and discarded for various reasons. There are a number of them that are electronically good, the...

Re: Thinking of making one for sale, considerations?

I've found myself relying upon selling my instruments because of long term unemployment. It has been a hard pill to swallow, but the market is very suppressed out there. I don't have such luxuries as waiting for months till it sells, I have to accept that "It's only worth what someone is willin...

Smokin' Hot Cedar

I just found this piece in the discard pile at my favorite Sawmill.
I just had to have it. I'm going to resaw this down as thin as I can and use it for decorative headstock panels and maybe a Uke or two.

Re: Use for old thickness planer blades

good point... these planer blades are expensive, finding practical uses for them when they are no longer useful on the planer just makes sense.
These have been resharpened till they are nubs on the planer barrel, but they are quality steel.
