Re: H.E. Brown’s “improved” Torres classical guitar

Thanks again, Alan. There is a whole-body vibration mode, analogous to the fundamental mode of a xylophone bar, than can couple usefully with the lowest 'air' resonance if the two are close enough in pitch. This dubbed the 'C-1', or 'first corpus' mode, or, sometimes, the 'neck' mode, since the neck...

Alan, care to elaborate on the changes in tone and feel with a bolted classical neck?

Re: Binding Side Ports

I've done ports two ways. First was binding like what we put around the back and top, bent on a hot pipe. At the junction, instead of having the two ends meet at a line perpendicular to the binding, I made it so that the line is at a diagonal, like a scarf joint. Another way, which works better with...

Re: Does anyone have a modular/portable/really small workshop?

My shop is small but workable. One of the things I spent time on when laying it out was to try to make floor space usable for more than one function. For example, the space that the entry door swings into is also the space where I stand at the bandsaw, and is also the space to access the ladder to o...

That was a great resource when I built my first guitar. Cumpiano/Natelson was strong on text, but weak on photos, and Kinkead had the photos.

Re: Removing oil from French Polishing

Not the traditional way, but you can eliminate oil altogether. Learned that from Cyndy Burton, who does the FP for Jeffrey Elliott's guitars.

Mistakes? Fess up!

I stumbled across an old thread where mistakes were mentioned, and thought maybe a thread on the subject would be worthwhile, if it hasn't been done already. Here are some of mine: When a classical neck with a Spanish heel was nearly finished, I found that I'd made an 11-fret neck. It became a stres...

Re: Neck Centering Jig

My problem is in finding nuts to fit the rods on the clamps my friend gave me. The clamp kit rods from Lee Valley have 5/16-18, but the full clamps have finer threads that I can't find a match for. Don't want to do it, but I may have to resort to locking collars instead of the nuts.

Thanks Barry

Re: Neck Centering Jig

Barry,

On the off-chance do you happen to remember the diameter and pitch of the Jorgensen threads? I've tried 5/16-18, 5/16-24, M8 x 1.00 and M8 x 1.25, RH and LH, but none of them fits.

Re: Neck Centering Jig

I have been making my jigs out of Lexan (or its generic equivalent) for some time now. It cuts much easier than acrylic plastic on the bandsaw (10 tpi blade). I cut wide of the mark and plane to it (Lexan planes very nicely). And, it doesn’t crack. It’s well worth the extra cost. Lexan is nice to w...

Re: Neck Centering Jig

Following up on this jig, I got the Lee Vally clamp kits, but they were pretty rough for this application. I had to chase the threads on one of the rods (good thing I didn't have to find a left-handed die!) because a 5/16-18 nut wouldn't go on and the barrel nuts are a bit too loose for my taste. Lu...
