Re: is tradtion holding us back wood wise?

Thanks Greg. Along the thought of the lower impedance pickups producing more bass response: Would it be correct to say that these pickups would sound "warmer"? And if so, and without any tone correction, would that perhaps create a muddy environment? Also, would the same hold true with the...

Re: is tradtion holding us back wood wise?

Ah.. Thank you Mr. Proulx. I completely agree. I have become so accustomed to playing 5 and 6 strings that I cannot even play a 4 string anymore. I am lost on it searching for my B string. When I said I play a lot of notes on the B string, that is precisely what I mean... I chord the B string all th...

Re: is tradtion holding us back wood wise?

Thanks guys for your input. Never really put that much thought into the differences in wood selection for acoustics vs. solids. I mean, I guess I assumed a lot of acoustic wood selection was based on the overall strength of the wood; and I also assumed the same basic tonal considerations would span ...

Re: is tradtion holding us back wood wise?

Hey guys, can either of you tell me about macassar ebony for a solid body wood? I am planning an 8-string bass build, and I am looking for a sound that is bright and growls like walnut, but has a stronger bottom end. I wasn't sure if I could get a stronger bottom end than walnut, but I read a review...

Re: is tradtion holding us back wood wise?

Yeah I guess lust was too strong. 'Coure I didn't mean lust as in the perverted sense, but rather in the 'strong desire' sense... like, "Man I gotta have one of those..." I like drool much better. :D I happened across a really nice piece of black walnut here in Tennessee that has a grain p...

Re: is tradtion holding us back wood wise?

I've often wondered... If we lust over "exotic hardwoods" because they come from far away lands... Then do the luthiers in the far away lands lust over the "exotic hardwoods" grown in America? Maybe we should open our eyes to what has been created right in front of us. Just sayin...

Re: Tonal Characteristics of Cherry?

Thanks Terry for the info. It is much appreciated. Sounds like the cherry i have will work nicely for my six stringer. Currently designing a walnut 5 string, and an ebony 8 string as well. I have a nice piece of cherry already, and was hoping it would work. Sounds like it will sound exactly as i hop...

Tonal Characteristics of Cherry?

:geek: Hello All, Just joined the forum. You guys are awesome. Planning to build my first few basses soon. Currently in the design phase. Was curious if anyone could give me a good definition of what tonal properties cherry has when used for a solid bodied bass? Planning a 6-string thru-neck and con...
