Re: 1954 Gretsch Truss Rod & Neck

One more. I gave Jesse Dayton access to my Google Drive and he posted one of my pics on Instagram. It gives a little more history on this very interesting instrument. (He gets the year wrong, but he hasn't owned it in decades.)

Jeff -- By Jove, that's it!!

I bow to your Googling skills; this video has been eluding me for over a year. I've now bookmarked this video and hereby thank you profusely! Awesome! :D

One more notable thing about this guitar. You can see it in action on Pam Tillis's "Spilled Perfume" video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seXH9zr9LPc

Here's a pic. I added a bit of saturation so you can see the figuring ... and 63 years of sweat stains. Like I said, this baby has gigged all over the planet.

Re: 1954 Gretsch Truss Rod & Neck

Well, after much wailing and gnashing of teeth, we decided to see how she'd do with 009-gauge strings (which is what my buddy usually uses) and a Synchro-Sound bridge he'd bought before bringing it over to me. The bridge was a touch too high, so I removed the thumbwheels and used some thin washers a...

Re: Neck pocket without any routing?

Oh I agree, I could probably figure out my own way in a jiffy! But there was something about the way this guy did it that I meant to bookmark (but failed to). Hence my desire to track it down. I wish I could recall his name. All I can recall is he was older, probably on the far side of middle age, b...

Neck pocket without any routing?

Okay, I'm at my wit's end here. Years ago, I saw a video of a guy who fashioned perfect neck pocket without cutting or carving anything. Honestly, I think it may have been here on MIMF -- but I'll be darned if I can find it. Long story short, the guy fashioned the neck joints by gluing the body piec...

Re: 1954 Gretsch Truss Rod & Neck

Quick update ... no real progress on the nut. I've heated, I've cooled, I've lubed. I've used PB Blaster, I've used melted wax. I've used clockwise torque and counterclockwise torque. I've even considered trying reverse psychology on the thing. It hasn't budged. I've still got a few tries left in me...

Re: 1954 Gretsch Truss Rod & Neck

This fretboard is solid rosewood ... about 3/16" thick at the crown.

Also, I can't thank everyone enough for this guidance! :D

Re: 1954 Gretsch Truss Rod & Neck

I did the penetrating oil/soldering iron thing, but so far, no luck. But I'm not giving up that easily and I'm in no hurry. I thought I'd try soaking the nut in PB Blaster, but of course you can't just dunk the headstock into a vat of the stuff. It so happens that my kids have these oversized drinki...

Re: 1954 Gretsch Truss Rod & Neck

Thanks, Barry! I hope you weathered Harvey okay. We got some water in the street, which made us more than a little nervous, but it all flowed away as designed. Not so for the people in the other section of my neighborhood, north of Briar Forest near Buffalo Bayou. They were all mandatorily evacuated...

1954 Gretsch Truss Rod & Neck

All -- A friend of mine has asked me to fix up some electricals on a highly modified 1954 Gretsch Country Club. He also wants me to adjust the truss rod if possible. (He bought this instrument from Jesse Dayton years ago!) Anyway, having carefully investigated the truss-rod situation on this 63-year...

Re: Tremolo Preference

Barry, I hope you made it through Hurricane Harvey okay. We managed to emerge unscathed, but many friends did not. I have an old mid-80s Charvel that has the original Kahler trem -- uh, vibr -- uh, whammy bar , with the locking nut. It withstood all the abuse I gave it back in college, did its job, ...
