Re: Cordia rosewood

Hey, I'm still around, too :) Yes, that pesky fungus still giving me fits with Burmese padauk and Amboyna. Seems the darker the color the more vicious the attack. Never in sapwood and never in orange colors. Freezing the wood for a week helps some.

Re: Finding figured maple supplier

Good luck with that. The expectation of buying high quality, expensive figured maple on the cheap is not realistic. Suppliers and vendors of this are not ignorant.

What are your side specs? Your back width is smaller than a Dyer.

Re: Hard vs. "soft" maple for a carved top solidbody?

While not common or commercial, birds eye (true) figure is in Big Leaf Maple (soft) and Euro Maple (soft). I have a billet or two of the Big Leaf birdseye and Raymond Kraut has done a stunning Euro birdseye maple guitar last year. I was skeptic of the specie until visiting his shop and seeing the cu...

Hi Greg, great timing as I'm cutting several sets for the Santa Barbara Acoustic Instrument Celebration first of Oct. I have several cut now and stock prepared for many more. Genuine Mahogany, curly claro walnut, steamed Makore and more.

Coming out of "retirement" for this one and will be lots of fun!! I cut some special stuff to show including QS black and white ebony sets and matching head plates and finger boards. Will be showing some harp guitar sets I've been having fun with.

(sigh) Bacteria can give you anthrax and pneumonia , but does not stain wood.

Re: Hard vs. "soft" maple for a carved top solidbody?

"Hard" and "soft" maple express botanical classifications, not relative resistance to denting or scratching. Also keep in mind physical characteristics vary plus or minus 20% in any given species. As often said here, it's not about the species so much as the wood piece in hand.

Mysterious stuff, Cactus Juice indeed. Something he buys in bulk, re-lables and you do not get original mfg MSDS. Good luck with that stuff and "process".

Re: Yes I know it hard to do from Photos

Kerry, thanks for being a good sport with this. Thing about (single) photo ID of wood is variety of colors, grain, etc., within any specific species. For instance, your photo shows a cut near a crotch and crotch wood can have luster, grain and color quite different than cuts in a straight bole. Mari...

Re: Please describe the physical properties of torrefied spruce

As much as I enjoyed the late posts.... Did you guys know that I had a 1929 roadster pickup with an Olds V8, channeled with cheater slicks....how did I ever become a guitar maker? I know. You became a guitar builder because half a set of torrefied spruce might just be one big piece of biochar???? T...

Mario, ton of biochar info on Google for all levels of study including commercial sources. Interesting reading and bet with your skills building a char stove would be a cake walk :) http://www.biochar-international.org/technology

Re: Please describe the physical properties of torrefied spruce

Yep, increased brittleness and decreased strength are torrefaction results to some degree or another regardless of baking temps and baking time. This is a good article on early USDA torrefaction study and possible commercial value. Spruce tonewood is certainly not baked to the high degree of charrin...
