Re: Detachable double bass neck

Chet, I checked out this Tucker guy... He's an amazing bass builder - using alternative woods, designs and finishes. (a man after my own heart) Even though my practice has not ever had anything to do with making basses, I've repaired my fair share, and find them fascinating (from a distance) they're...

It is generally recommended to not use silicon waxes on Violins, as that could interfer with future repair. Glue does not adhere to silicon.
Absolutely correct.
At least, I find that this is true also.

Re: Who's here now?

The preferred horse hair is considerably more coarse than human hair. You could probably make Mario's hair work with enough rosin but I don't think he is coming anywhere close enough to get hold of him. Hey, look , no problem - just point him out or distract him long enough, so's we can tackle him ...

Re: log in and post question

So, posting a tutorial (with photos) about rehairing a bow in the stringed instrument section, would be possible? (All the photos would be mine, or (I'm hoping) from a reply from a poster...) Absolutely! So, the photos would end up on this site, and not only be accessed by a link or links in the in...

Re: Rehairing process

Sorry about the time lag, but I will get to this soon. I'm finding a great deal of difficulty recovering from this stroke - it's been four mounths and I am barely catching up with the present - but I will get there, with my new computer, and my m16 mp camera, and re learning MIMF's photo posting reg...

Re: My Latest Two Violins

I swear John, you should see Fransis cox's ebony violins... (with the belly and backs and ribs and necks of ebony...) or even just hear them. In many ways I believe you two guys would have found much in common to discuss. I'll try to check him out. John Oop's, Mr. Cox is retired now, and living in ...

Re: My Latest Two Violins

Your work look very nice. I love the originality. I haven't made much money selling mine, but I get the materials and tools paid for and the satisfaction of watching some one enjoy my work. I played Cello in a quartet with instruments I had made and that was a humbling experience hearing all of tha...

Mario,

I do believe, given a pair of sharp sissors, I'd be willing to try just about anything...

Listen man, all you gotta do is show up and stand still for a second.

Cool?

It's been a while, so I didn't remember the wetting part, but the flaming is the same as I remember. You might even move a little more quickly through the flame, which is probably a good thing.

Read the rules?

What?

Rehairing process

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CLnvVKn_VQ I will start with this by posting a you tube short video, which I made about a year ago, showing one of the difficult things to describe in just words - which is done at the end of a rehair - but it is something I have already recorded on you tube - so hear...

I use a cardboard box with a heating pad inside... First I let the heating pad reach its temperature (L,M,H,Off), which I will set by feel, with the temperature switch, then I will put whatever part(s) I want to glue in the box for some ten or fifteen minutes, until it is (they are) warm to the touc...

Re: Who's here now?

Hello Cliff. Ya, I remember you too from back then. I also have built 20 violins (and 1 classical guitar). Putting the finish on 19 and 20 as I speak. I am going to keep making until I get one with a finish that I am happy with <g> So, you plan on making violins for the rest of your life, huh? (tee...

Re: Who's here now?

I remember the cold bending method. Actually it may have been a search through the old Library but I certainly remember the technique because it was an unusual method. Never did bend any Violin ribs using it though. Having said that a friend and myself used the method for bending the limbs of the r...

Re: Who's here now?

Thanks Craig. Very often, saying what you really see, and how you feel about it, is exactly enough of a large boca, huh? Been told that before. Had several jobs/situations where I told the truth ---told what I saw --- said what was right --- and it got me thrown right out the door --- or ignored --...
