Re: Flexible routing jig

Hi Alan, this is what I have been doing for my whole "lutherie" life. Like I said, results were pretty good. I was just wondering if this jig might give me an even better result. I am not at all convinced. I will probably leave it alone. I just found a great guy close to my house with a la...

Re: Flexible routing jig

Ok Thanks. So far I have always built plantillas and molds freehand. Some of them are pretty decent, others are not as good as I would like. Curves are a bit bumpy. I don't know how noticeable they are. Sometimes it's just a matter of how close your look and what kind of magnification you use. There...

Flexible routing jig

Hello, I was wondering if any of you has ever used this kind of tool: https://www.cmtorangetools.com/na-en/systems-and-accessories/flexible-templates-for-curved-and-arched-routing I guess it is useful when making the plantilla or outsid mold. But I am not sure. I am afraid that it doesn't completely...

Building template for archtop dovetail

Hello everyone, I want to build a template jig for routing the dovetail. For several reasons I don’t want to use the commercial products. The question is, by knowing the diameter of the collet, the angle of the dovetail bit and the bottom diameter, is there a magical formula to calculate the exact d...

Re: Honeycomb Tops

I have the Gore Gilet book. They describe lattice bracing but not nomex, IIRC. Randy Reynolds stuff is very useful. There is also an article by him on American lutherie. Also, you might want to take a look at John Dick website.

Re: Sunburst on Tom Bills archtop

Yes Barry, I once saw part of a tutorial from him teaching French polish. He is very dedicated to this job. It was kind of a meditation for him. That is the reason why I asked about his technique of applying a sunburst. Just because I knew it was applied by hand. I might write to him as Brian sugges...

Sunburst on Tom Bills archtop

Hello everybody. If you take a look at guitargal there is an archtop by Tom bills. To my eyes is a wonderful instrument. I’d like to get inspired by it. It says that it’s French polished. Do you think that kind of sunburst can be obtained only by using different shade of shellac? Or maybe by using a...

Archtop side thickness

Hello Everybody, I just started the project of building an archtop according to Benedetto. In his book he says to bend maple sides 3/32 thick. That is 2.4 mm. It is very thick in my experience. I usually bend 2 mm sides for my classical guitars. 1.9 mm bend even easier. I just would like to get an o...

Re: Help request with my drum sander

You’re right I missed it. I was probably discouraged by reading all these English technical terms. I think I will have to spend some time and read the instructions accurately. There is a lot of information that I miss for sure. Thanks for taking the time to look into it

Re: Help request with my drum sander

Yes there is definitely a problem. Yesterday I tried to thickness sand some balsa for my double top. The first and last 2 inches come out thinner by about 0.2 mm. I tried to support the wood but it didn’t make any difference. I will figure out something. Thanks for your help.

Re: Help request with my drum sander

Barry, as far as I know yes I take very light passes. Especially when I get close to my final thickness. The last few passes I do not even change the height of the drum to get it as even as I can. Peter, ok next time I want to try to exert some light upward pressure both at the beginning and at the ...

Re: Help request with my drum sander

Peter, it is thinner for few cm on each end. Maybe 2 or 3 cm. At first I thought it was the feed table because it was quite heavy. Then I just used one of the two sides as a feed table. The problem is present anyway. In your case, are you having constant thickness all over the places? Bob, I will tr...
