Re: books on violin bow construction

Try doing a search for a book called "A bow on the couch" by Andreas Grutter. While not a how-to book, I found it a fascinating discussion of the factors contributing to the tone and quality of different types of bows (including how to properly orient the grain on your blank). I have a pdf...

Re: Gurdy-Dulcimer

Interesting. Maybe you could build it with a stand and a treadle for the drones?

Re: Mandolin Setup Question

The same thing can happen on the bridge end of the strings. Thanks Jon, I will keep that in mind. I appear to have lucked out this time. On the subject of bridges, can anyone explain the theory behind having the crest of the bridge alternating about 1/8" between pairs of strings? It always see...

Re: Mandolin Setup Question

Michael,
Your advice was right on the money. Adjusting the angle of the E string slots solved the problem.
Thanks!

Mandolin Setup Question

I just completed my first instrument, a campfire mandolin kit from Stew-Mac. The E strings are distinctly twangy when played open, but seem fine when fretted, so I am guessing that the problem is in the nut slots. The other strings sound fine. Can anyone give me some advice on how to proceed? Campfi...

Re: What should I Call This?

I second the Cheesbox name. Cigar Box Nation has a 1930's Popular Mechanics article with a cheese box guitar.

Re: Savart Mandolin

Bryan,
Thanks for the advice. I had been pondering using my heat gun, but now I will go ahead and start with the pipe bender. I like the idea of the electric charcoal starter.

Re: Savart Mandolin

Jim/Arnt, Good points, thanks for the advice. I probably will go for an AN style and experiment with bending. Any opinions on a good heating system for a beginner to build for bending? I really want to build from scratch for the experience, and as a carver shaping the neck is something I am looking ...

Savart Mandolin

I am considering a 1st-time project trying to build a mandolin with a Savart violin type triangular body. My thought was that this style body would simplify my first attempt, but be a step above a cigar box instrument. I am a good carver, so I am not too worried about making the neck. Does anyone ha...
