Advice needed: what top coat to go with?

I just used a roughing up technique and a couple of different wood dyes to make my most recent body look like rustic barn wood. I'm so happy with it -- I wish I could keep it just as it is, but it obviously needs protection. I'm wondering what you think would be the best top coat to retain the flat,...

Re: Ideas Needed

Hey Scott, I made this using african mahog and chinaberry. The colors were pretty dissimilar. The chinaberry had pink tones in it. I applied an amber dye to both materials to make the overall color cohesive. I've done this on several builds where I was not pleased with the color difference. I usual...

Re: Ideas Needed

Scott. By the sound of your initial post, you are looking to get a "richer" look from the woods you have chosen. Perhaps something to bring out the grain and make it look a bit more amber? My opinion on this would be to use a two part epoxy. Epoxy works as a grain filler, which would be g...

Re: Ideas Needed

Scott, I'm not sure where you're getting your ideas of what a "professional" and "civilized" finish might be coming from but I'd urge you to continue to listen to your own aesthetic judgement and play around with other finish formulations. Getting any stain and particularly wate...

Ideas Needed

Hello Folks, I'm working on a neck-through with a maple neck (rosewood fretboard) and African mahogany wings. All of the contours are in place, cavities are cut, etc., and it's sanded to 320. It's ready to be finished, but I'm not sure where to go. My initial plan was to use a water-based medium amb...

Advice: Neck Through Finish

Hello All -- I have a neck through ready to be finished. It's a maple neck with Honduran mahogany wings. I don't want it to be completely natural, but I do want the difference between the neck and the wings to still be evident. Since the mahogany is relatively dark, any color stain would have to be ...

Re: Routing neck pickup on neck through build

Would it be feasible to just make a routing template taller than the neck?

Routing neck pickup on neck through build

So, I kind of cheated a bit on my first build by using a Carvin NT6 neck. I attached the wings; I'm ready to rout the pickup cavities when I wonder "how in the world am I going to rout for the neck pickup (humbucker) with the fretboard in the way?" It's 24 frets, so I *wanted* to put the n...

I Could Really Use Some Help (fretboard to body distance)

I bought a Carvin NT6 neck (neck through) awhile back. I just thought "Well, I'm going to cut out the wing design and attach them -- easy right?" That part was easy, but now I realize that there is only about 1/4" from the fretboard to the body on the sides and about 5/16" in the...

Neck-Through Pickup Wiring Channel

I don't mean to wear out my welcome with newbie questions, but everyone's help here has been indispensable. First time builder, limited knowledge, try to learn as much as I can from books and google, but always end up having a few questions. I'm making a neck-through guitar with two humbuckers and a...

Pickup Position Placement

Hello... I'm in the process of making my first guitar and kind of taking it slow and learning as I go. The pickups that I have are two Seymour Duncan Blackouts, and the guitar has a 25" scale with 24 frets. I have Schaller bridge which is already mounted in the proper position for the scale (ht...

Pickguard Design

Hello... my dad and I are building our first guitar and have decided to use a pickguard. I have attached a picture of a very preliminary draft. I realize that pickguard design is probably quite subjective, but any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. For example, is it too close to the...

Bridge Placement Headaches

So I tried searching all reaches of the internet but could not find a good answer to these questions: What is the best way to determine where the bridge should be placed? Where should the saddles be when measuring? Are measurements based on the saddle location of a specific string? I realize that th...
