Just Intonation Tuner for Linux

I've made a Just Intonation tuner, which contains a bunch of scales which can be modulated to any (microtonal) key. The release announcement is made over here , including a link to the repository. Feel free to use it, it's open source. I've made a recording using the tuner to find the septimal minor...

Re: PVC Shakuhachi Style Flutes

Sigh... Yes one of these days, when all started and thought of projects are finished... Will that day ever come.... ;-)

There's a Chinese gentleman how made a instrument which he called a little sax which I think is a cool instrument.

Re: Reviving an easy to make horn instrument with potential

Rasmus, That's a cool experiment you're doing. I'm also experimenting with pvc pipe flutes , there's an interesting link to a PHD thesis, which also deals with conical shaped instruments. The rate between length and the slope (is that the right word for it?) of the cone is important. Just a thought,...

Re: PVC Shakuhachi Style Flutes

No I haven't tried to make double finger accidentals. I've only made minor pentantonic, major scale (and one major pentatonic) tuned flutes. Some notes on the shakuhachi are played with double fingerings, but always require some adjustments while blowing the tone. From what I understand that there i...

Re: PVC Shakuhachi Style Flutes

The blue is great, it helps to make the plastic flute looks less like, well plastic... I've heard that traditional shakuhachi makers weren't that much bothered by exact tuning, they more less made holes at certain distances and fine tuned while playing (which is easily done with a shakuhachi mouthpi...

Re: PVC Shakuhachi Style Flutes

The color is dark blue here in the Netherlands, when it is used for clean water. They use a lighter grayish blue for sewer pipe. It has printed markings on them but I (wet) sand them of. As for the notch: I make an approximate 30 degrees cut with a hacksaw and then sand it flat with 240 dry and 320,...

PVC Shakuhachi Style Flutes

Lately I've been intrigued by making flutes, in particular the shakuhachi , due to it's simplicity on one side, but it's complexity to master it. Furthermore being a science teacher I'm always on the lookout for cool educational projects, and (the science of) flutemaking has a lot to offer! What I t...

Re: Richlite or other synthetic fretboard supplier

Are you familiar with Trespa? I think it's pretty much the same product.
It's made by a Dutch company, so availability in Europe should not be a problem.

Re: one-string slide-guitar with whammy bar stick

You don't need a lot of tools. A drill with a forstner bit and a chisel will make it possible to create the cavities you want.

Re: one-string slide-guitar with whammy bar stick

Cool, this would work. Google for "Fender whammy bar cavity" and you get a lot of pictures of the internal of a Fender, it will give you the information you need. There are some detailed drawings of a Fender body swarming around on the net, which will give you the measurements you need. Wh...

Re: one-string slide-guitar with whammy bar stick

It looks to be a Vietnamese instrument called a "Dan Bau" I found several you tube videos of it but couldn't figure out how to post a link to them. One looked to be the same gentleman in the videos you posted. Searching YouTube for Dan Bau gives several useful hits indeed. There's also a ...

Nope, it's only to save space, so using a whole tremolo isn't a problem.

Looking forward to the drawings.

Re: one-string slide-guitar with whammy bar stick

First of all: Cool that you start this project, it will be a great journey. A lot depends on what kind of instrument you want to build and money you want to spend on it. Because you slide the string instead of pressing it on a fretboard and you use only one string, your choose of wood isn't that cri...

Man, I wish that my first bass I've build looked that way... That's a nice instrument, cool!

You got some pretty high wound pickups, are you after a fat bass tone?

Re: one-string slide-guitar with whammy bar stick

I can't really tell from the video but it seems that he uses his right hand to hit the string and his left to modify the pitch. But is there a string he hits? Or is it more a theremin-like instrument? Best thing -obvious- is to ask the guy if you see him play agian. I find it an interesting instrume...

Re: The Quintar Project: Popularizing an All Fifths Tuning

I've made a short video on how to retune a nylon string acoustic to an All Fifths Tuning.
No adjustments have to be made to the guitar.
With adding a piece of 0,5mm monofilament fishing line I can even tune up to a high B (a fifth higher then a high E string).

Everytime I see "weird" or "strange" in a title I'm curious to look.

I like the design and be following this with interest.
You probably know this site. I've found it a good resource.

Re: Guitar Synth, Ergonomic Shape, Baritone tuning

Beate, Have you ever checked out the strings as moving coils concept? This has a great potential for making a hexaphonic pickup. The different pickups are completely electronically separated from eachother. On the MEF there's a great discussion on this subject. I did several tests and this concept w...
