Re: Completed Electric Violin

Hi Dan, I have a small 30 watt Crate amp that she can play it through at home, but generally she's on stage in a large theater when she plays with a band. So it's played through a house system. The Baggs Para D.I. I think is good at conditioning the pickup and it has phantom power so she doesn't hav...

Re: Completed Electric Violin

Well-planned and executed, sir! It's very interesting to see how folks interpret the electric violin, since there isn't really a standard design. The lower bout outline is there, but no upper bout. Is your daughter having any issues without the neck-body join as a reference? Jason, I was concerned ...

Completed Electric Violin

Here's an electric violin I just completed for my daughter. She normally plays acoustic, but prefers an electric when playing on a stage with a band (primarily at our church). Neck is maple, body is pine. Finish is nitrocellulose lacquer - first 2 coats tinted with transtint. Pickup is LR Baggs. No ...

Re: Bending inquiry

I haven't bent a ton of sides but I've often wondered why people use a propane torch when a lightbulb provides so much more even heat. I used a thermocouple to measure surface temp and couldn't get an even temp with a torch. I switched to a 200W bulb and had terrific results. I do think the guys who...

Thanks for the encouragement. Chet, I did try a scraper and what a difference that made. Scrapers are a miraculous invention. I'm off and running again.

Re: New Design Peghead using lightweight Tuners (Pics)

Dan, I'm also a guitar guy building an electric violin. I've been designing it for awhile and built a prototype which my daughter played to check out the feel. I am using Gotoh minis but they are very heavy unfortunately. I have not yet found light weight open tuners that fit well where I need 'em t...

Re: Could someone offer a couple pointers on my scroll carving (photos)

Thanks for the great suggestion for materials to make a special scraper from Chet. The sheetrock mudding knife hadn't occured to me as a good heat treated raw material for a custom scraper - I'll be trying that!

Re: latest from my bench

Hi Barry, your "latest from my bench" is terrific and inspired me to post a question about my scroll carving struggles. Any chance you'd share what tool you're using to shape the back of the scroll? Scrapers, etc? My daughter often talks of wishing to try a 5-string violin someday - I noti...

Could someone offer a couple pointers on my scroll carving (photos)

I'm working on an electric violin for my daughter. This one has a simplified scroll as the tuners are on the opposite end of the strings. I wanted to emulate an acoustic violin scroll on the bottom. I'm am concerned that when a gloss finish is applied the carved profile imperfections will be obvious...
