Re: General Finishes Waterbase Topcoat - SM is pushing this - anyone tried it?

Just yesterday I watched a video featuring a famous jazz guitar builder in which he stated that all the water based finishes he has tried show glue lines.

I am going to stick with Mohawk lacquer which I started using only about three years ago and love it and wish I had used it twenty years ago.

James

I found these Sewline brand white ceramic leads for a mechanical pencil for fabric marking that work very well. They are a bit more brittle than standard leads.

Re: Sycamore

A great wood for many uses. bends super easy. I have used it for back & sides, necks, bridge plates, side bracing, linings, cross-grain patches for side sound holes and where electronics are side mounted.

A great wood when you need light and tough.

Re: SawStop and fret slotting

I don't like and will never touch a SawStop for on main reason. In 2012 they, the company, supported legislation to make the (patented) SawStop feature a requirement in all table saws. And don't tell me this is because they care so much about peoples fingers. They supported it purely for business. T...

Re: Iwata LPH80

Yes I just use the one needle and only use the LPH80 for shading. I talked to a guy with a lot of experience with the LPH80 and he had tried different needles and settled on the 1.2 for sunbursts and shading. I use a Warwick detail gun with a 1.2 for color coating. The Warwick detail gun would also ...

Re: Iwata LPH80

Steve I ordered from ebay with a 1.2 needle and fluid nozzle- LPH80-124G. ebay had the best price. On ebay type in Iwata LPH80 and several of the dealers straight from Japan will have a list with the item which shows the different gun/needle/fluid nozzles and the part numbers. Also, at Iwata USA, ht...

Re: Iwata LPH80

I use the Iwata LPH80 for sunbursts and it is an amazing gun. I have not used it with a small compressor but it think it will work with the CFM you have if you are spraying one guitar at a time.

I have tried a lot of brands of guns and the Iwata is the best.

Re: I need a new gun...for new guitars and repair, lacquer main use..Reasonable $$

Steve The HVLP gun I mentioned uses compressed air. IMO the best gun for the money, for guitar finishing and even larger objects, would be the Iwata LPH300 which is considered a mid sized gun and about $200.00 less than their full sized guns and about $300.00 less than other higher priced full sized...

Re: I need a new gun...for new guitars and repair, lacquer main use..Reasonable $$

Due the many good reviews, last year I bought the "Professional" HVLP nickel plated spray gun model from Harbor Freight #68843. When I cleaned it I noticed the parts are machined very well, as well as the high priced guns I have like the Iwata. I wanted it for a dedicated sealer gun but no...

Re: Tone woods- how are they determined. Measurement, opinion

The picture below is of the Benedetto guitar Mr. Knapp mentioned. I have sets of insanely super quilted Sapele, which is flat-sawn, which for years I hesitated to use because it's tap-tone is like cardboard. When I finally used a set the guitar's tone was wonderful. it sold very quickly. Putting a l...

Thank you very much for posting this. I've never heard of a hand held computer guided router.

I wonder how it would do on inlaying?

Re: Considering a thickness sander. What to get?

Peter That's a good idea. It probably not really necessary, but I let the joint pass every time which allows even a 36" length guitar side to sand end to end without being over the belt joint. This is not really necessary for general sanding because the head is very rigid but, FYI: I built a br...

Re: Considering a thickness sander. What to get?

I have had a Delta 18/36 drum sander for 12 to 15 years now. It has worked great. I chose it because it functions more like a planer with the table moving up and down on 4 jack screws and a stationary head. if I were going to buy a new sander I would go with the General single drum 24" sander w...
