Re: To truss rod or not to truss rod

Im not set on the size yet. I have several different options available. One of the bars I had my hands on seems like it would work well but I wanted to get some opinions. I also have aluminum but it gives a bit too easy.

To truss rod or not to truss rod

I know this subject has been beat to death but instead of using an adjustable double action truss rod in a neck, would two 1/16" x 1/4" steel bars be okay in place of a rod? I know it would not be adjustable in any way but I prefer to have a flat neck anyways. I was thinking of having them...

Re: First try

Thank you. I have slowed down on the build but I am still in the process of shaping the back of the neck. I have been using a rasp but its a cheapy and isnt doing too well. Most of the work has been done with 60 and 80 grit paper. I have the bloodwood fingerboard layed out and will be cutting the fr...

Re: convert to a 10 string

It would probably be better built from scratch. I would also think that the difference in string sizes would be hard to fret at the same time but I could be wrong.

First try

Thought I would share what I have started. It is going to be a mix of a Strat and a Les Paul with some of my own styling in it. Here is the neck after a rough cut. It started with a flat sawn hard maple board that was cut into 1.5 inch by .75 inch strips then glued together. http://www.bsmpro.com/ne...

Re: Mixing paint types

I can't seem to find what type of paint these are. The clear only states acrylic. The satin finish doesn't say anything. It finishes similar to laquer that I have used before. The acrylic seems to build up like a good enamel. I just wish they would state that on the packaging. This was only testing ...

Mixing paint types

I have been playing around with scrap trying to pick a good finish and color and I had something odd happen today. I sprayed a clear acrylic down to seal and level the wood and let it dry for a few days. I sanded it and sprayed a satin base coat on top of the clear and it dried really nice. I let th...

Re: A bit too much off the neck

Everything was going okay until I was cutting the top profile of the neck and I cut past my lines. After working out the tool marks with 80 grit, I ended up with a bit more then I thought. It ended up 54mm at the tail and 41mm at the nut. It should be good to go with the bridge I am planing to use.

A bit too much off the neck

I finally got the top profile cut for my first project and I let the saw get too close to my guide lines and now I have to sand out some tool marks narrowing my neck. Right now the nut is still at 42mm but the base of the neck is going to be under 52 mm. Most of the bridges I would like to use range...

I decided to stay above .75 with this one. Although I do like my .08s. :)

Re: ...ooopsss ..safety planer slip..

Oops I must of being in a hurry when reading it the first time. I was talking about the whole neck. I really like the feel of a thin unfinished maple neck.

Re: ...ooopsss ..safety planer slip..

I was thinking about going that thin on the neck I am working on but I was concerned with strength. Although its at 1" now and it seems you can drive a car over it without any give.

It might get another pass or two over the jointer if you guys think it is okay.

Re: Painting

Does sandable enamel primer seal enough to shoot a basecoat on or is a harder sealer a must? I have been playing around with a clear acrylic spray that is doing a great job so far but it seems to be taking a lot of coats to fill in even small scratches. Could be operator error and failure to spend m...

Re: Painting

I am thinking about doing a flat color as a base and then a transparent top coat with a bit of a sun burst effect but trying some things out on scrap to see what I like first. I was able to get some nice examples using a clear lacquer base to seal and sand before each coat but I'll look around some ...

Painting

I have found some good material on individual steps of repainting or fixing finishes but I have yet to run into a good tutorial on painting a newly built guitar. I am still selecting a wood for the body but the neck is hard maple. I have been playing around with some rattle cans on scrap but even th...

Re: Solid Body Bass Neck Through

Yeah I am either going to do a maple or rosewood fretboard on top with the truss rod installed under it. I like the look of the back installed rod with the skunk stripe but this one is going to be painted. I'll give it a go with one board's thickness first. If I have to make any passes over the join...

Re: Solid Body Bass Neck Through

Thank you for the help. I am away from my stock but I am pretty sure it is flat sawn. If I wanted a strat/tele style neck and head, would I be okay leaving it the thickness of .75" or should I glue two together and plane down to the desired size? I noticed a lot of necks run over .80". One...

Solid Body Bass Neck Through

I am diving head first into my first build and need some help with the neck of my project. I am building a 30" scale neck through bass for my wife and I am stuck on how I need to go about making the neck blank. I chose hard maple for the wood and finally found a mint 1x6 with little flaws in it...
