Re: Cort SFX E NS Loose neck joint

We managed to press the neck out. (Very Gently) It was indeed a dovetail. The glue had failed on one side and the dovetail had been broken off on the other. The broken wood in the mortise was stopping the neck sliding up. It is now being repaired with a double tenon bolt on. The dovetail was very ba...

Cort SFX E NS Loose neck joint

I have a Cort SFX E NS with a loose neck joint in for repair. It seemed the glue on the dovetail joint had failed and the neck was only being held in by the fretboard extension glue onto the sound board. However heating and getting the fretboard to release from the soundboard still wont let me push ...

Re: Counter clockwise cutting router bits

Perhaps you can get your local sharpening service to grind one appropriately for you?

My service is always willing to grind and try out something. Have had router bits modified and a circular saw blade ground down to do fret slotting.
Cost me around R100 each (around $5US)

Re: ES 330/ Casino

I have a ES330 copy which I am restoring (top is somewhat bust up) From what I can find the ES330 top bracing is exactly the same as the ESS335. Ie is the made out of spruce, profiled longitudinally, kerfed and glued to the underside of the top. And yes it is the same width as the ES335. The 330 emp...

Re: Saving a headstock that suffered multiple failures

Very nice job!

Any reason you didn't put a veneer on the back of the headstock?

Re: Fretting Templates

Yes I discovered that a while back looking at Fender scale lengths and doing some mathematics using the 12 root of 2. They all relate. You can start with a 36 inch bass length and derive them all simply by choosing an appropriate nut position. The Gibsons dont they seem to have done their own thing....

Re: Chapman stick?

The Acoustic version looks very interesting.

Having watched and listened to Yoyo playing I am surprised there is enough string energy for the acoustic.

And yes the pricing is surprisingly good.

Re: Chapman stick?

It finally lives: https://youtu.be/UjpLtkUepho A short clip of the Cobra Tap played by a friend of mine: Yoyo Buys. He is a stringed instrument savant and is now playing bass for The Dire Straits Experience. However with all the Covid nonsense they are not playing anywhere much. Shows keep getting c...

Fretting Templates

What are the most useful fretting templates to have?

I require a 36" and a 34.5" right now and the laser cutting service has a minimum charge and will cut me 6 templates for the same price. (Around $20 US)

What suggestions? 25.5", 24.75" what others?

Re: Enlarging bass headstock

What style of head-stock is it? Flat like fender or angled back like Gibson?

Re: Ibanez Concord 751

I did look at using the Bridge Doctor a few months ago on a Yamaha 12 string but the previous attempt at repairing and getting the action lowered involved lowering the saddle and cutting the ramps lower to the bridge pins in order to give enough break over the saddle. Needless to say this interfered...

Ibanez Concord 751

I have an Ibanez Concord 751 on my work bench which is in need of a bridge removal, sound board flattening and bridge re-glue. On inspection I found the bridge has a bolt through it and through the soundboard and bridge plate through the centre perloid dot inlay. Does anyone know if the dots on the ...

Truss rod nut 1974 Ibanez

I have a 1974 Ibanez Country Classic copy in for repair which needs a new truss rod nut.

The Allen head has been stripped by using the wrong size key.

Does any one know if this is an Imperial or metric nut?

And where I can obtain a new one?

Re: Neck geometry question for semi?

Thank you Freeman. 1/8” of arch is surprisingly little. On a couple of plans I found online, 1/2” seems more common. In any case, I have my answer. All the dimensions that make up the neck geometry are tweaked and not standard to Gibson arch top guitars despite some visual similarity. I’ve spent so...

Form for laminating guitar sides

I have been looking at this old thread in the library: http://www.mimf.com/library/Laminating_multi-ply_acoustic_guitar_backs_and_sides__Pictures_-12-21-2007.html What is best? Building an Inside or an outside form for laminating over? Cutting an outside form for the usual glue up of the sides head ...

Re: Cutting fret slots failed. And now?

What I have done when inadvertently cut a slot in the wrong place is filled it with veneer of the same species and as close a colour as you can find cut of the end grain of a strip. Gluing the veneer in with cyano and making sure it is proud of the fretboard face then sanding it down level and pushi...
