Re: Jet Drum Sander

The 10-20 sanders had a run of screws that were out of spec 15 years or so back, so they stripped the threaded boss on the adjustment plate. For those sanders, swapping the threaded rod makes sense. For the 16-32, not so much.

Re: fractured very tall bridge

There was a builder that was active in the area for a time and built with faceted sides...likely because he never understood the whole 'heat the wood while moving it' thing. Had one come in a few years ago with terrible bridge geometry, generally awful workmanship, and those crazy asymmetrical polyg...

Re: Cutting rosettes by hand?

OLFA's #11 blades are far superior to what the Chinese are producing for Excel/X-acto...ready to go right from the package, versus the work needed to touch up a blade that is dull already and usually has a hook on the end.

Re: fractured very tall bridge

It there is an option at this point, I'd take a pass on this repair. With that sort of excessive string height over the top and a traditional pinned bridge, nothing good lies in store for that instrument. At some point, the owner may associate your efforts to address the immediate issue with all of ...

Re: fretboard dots

If the board is well striped or a uniformly black ebony, the rout can be stopped just clear of the inlays instead of going all the way to the edge of the board...use some dust and epoxy to adhere and fill, using a naturally dark line as a boundary. With strings on, even a bad match is much tougher t...

Re: Tormek clones? Any experience?

Sold my T-2000 recently after an extended period of running it side-by-side with a low speed 8" grinder with CBN wheels. Much faster than the Tormek for routine flat grinding, and the aluminum wheel tends to suck up grinding heat, so the edge stays much cooler. Turners have been using the techn...

Re: Reglue plastic bindings. What glue?

The problem is that the ABS/PVC alloys such as Bolteron do not glue well to begin with...they really need a primer and a hot solvent like a methylene chloride...and whatever Martin used for the job from the early 1990's to today does not hold well for those plastics or for cellulose nitrate. For pur...

Sides and top/back are independent processes until the rim is ready for plate fitting for closing. Rim Construction: - Lay out, thickness, and sand interior of sides to P220 - Label and add indexing to sides (I mark the outside neck end with a single tape square for a full side and two tape squares ...

A used Genz-Benz Shenandoah 85 and a kitted Fender Deluxe...less than $300 for each. The G-B is for acoustic installs (takes some time to get things right on some pickup systems) and sussing out mag pup issues, while the Deluxe is decent for the stuff that normally gets plugged in. Had a Cube on the...

Re: question on gluing titebond joint back together

I think the same can be said of those million and a half Martins that have been built since they switched to thermoplastic glues - for the most part, the instruments are holding together... cold creeping and shedding braces here and there, but with the big pieces still more or less attached ;-)

Re: question on gluing titebond joint back together

Titebond is more a contaminant than a glue when dry. Clean the goop out and reglue with hot hide glue. I don't consider any variety of Titebond to be a satisfactory glue for any wood project expected to last long enough to need the sort of periodic refresh that any musical instrument can expect to s...

Re: Please, your thoughts on rasps

The Corradi Gold rasps are about as good as the Aurious - I have the 10" 10 grain and 6" 10 grain in the shop and really like them. The stitch pattern is computer-generated to avoid the issues with machine-stitching, and the tool cuts smoothly due to the lack of those odd miscue teeth that...

Re: Acoustic bass Wedged shape Cocobolo/Englemann

I agree, Clay, although it seems to me that claiming credit for invention and insisting on that acknowledgement is a step or two over the line that both of us would prefer to observe. Seems to me a little like Martin claiming the square/taper headstock as their mark, or Gibson attempting to own the ...

Re: Acoustic bass Wedged shape Cocobolo/Englemann

Having been through the patent wringer successfully, ignore the pretty pictures and read the claims. The claims are the beating heart of a patent; they are the legal limits to what the patent holder can ask the courts to enforce. If it's not in the claims, it is not an enforceable element of the pat...

Re: Truss rod choice for OM build

Neck access is generally something that requires two tools (tool to remove cover plate and truss rod wrench) and as Alan mentioned, weakens the head stock quite a bit. Ask any guitar repair person for the makeup of the broken necks they see, and the overwhelming majority will be Gibson or Gibson clo...

Re: Acoustic bass Wedged shape Cocobolo/Englemann

I am curious on how much you deepened the body on the treble side to recover the lost volume from the wedge - it seems like 5-1/4" is the practical limit to depth on a 0000 shaped bass, but support for E1 is still lacking even at that body volume. We've built them to 5-1/8" and still maint...

ShurTape fiberglass reinforced carpet tape is excellent, and easily releases even in on large stuff like rosettes with a little naphtha.
