Re: First build buff out

I'm not a big fan of a super high-gloss finish either. But the method of using multiple grades of paper really has nothing to do with the degree of gloss the finish will have. It simply makes level sanding much quicker and easier. And while I don't care for a finish to have extreme gloss, I do want ...

Thanks guys! They've both turned out to be quite nice and have a very full and warm sound.

Eddie McRae - Twin Grand Auditorium Cutaways - Challenge Guitars

I'm just now finding time to post these pictures for those that wanted to see how these turned out once completed. These are the 2 guitars that I was building for this past challenge. The challenge thread that shows them as they progressed is here...... http://www.mimf.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=27&a...

Re: Neck Pocket

Fender-type guitars or guitars using Fender-type bridges normally require a neck pocket that is 9/16" - 5/8" deep. I normally use a depth of 9/16" because this allows for a slightly lower action adjustment. These measurements, though, are contingent upon the neck thickness being 3/4&q...

Re: First build buff out

Actually, coming from an automotive paint background, I can pretty much tell you that your problem comes from the 1200 grit sandpaper. That's not near fine enough for final sanding. With lacquer, I would say take it to 2000 minimum but I recommend 2500 for the final sanding. I normally work my way u...

Re: Alternate acoustic tops

I thinned the top a little more than I normally would with spruce or cedar. I checked top thickness in 5 or 6 different places and it was consistently .080" -.085". Not sure how it will translate once the strings hit it but as of now, the body seems to be a good bit more resonant than the ...

Re: Alternate acoustic tops

Just to follow up with an update....I decided to pull the trigger and give the cherry a try. I closed the box today on a another GA cutaway style guitar. Black walnut back and side with a figured cherry top. I used black walnut for the rosette with goldpowder rings. It's looking great so far...and e...

Thank you Patrick! You did a great job yourself. I absolutely love the back on that acoustic you built for the challenge! Beautiful!

Re: $100 Local Materials Challenge, Eddie McRae, Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic

Thanks Mark. I've actually got somewhere around 10 guns in the shop. Coming from an automotive paint background, I've accumulated quite a few over the years. The main ones that I use though are as follows: Sharp Cobalt Gravity HVLP (1.4 needle) Binks Touchup Gun (non-HVLP) Binks #7 (non-HVLP) Binks ...

Re: Painting

A word of caution regarding spraycan lacquer from automotive stores.......it was mentioned above about the auto industry using lacquer in the early 70's and you can still find lacquer sometimes in spraycans in some auto parts stores today.....BUT!!!.....auto lacquer is acrylic lacquer. It is not nit...

Re: $100 Local Materials Challenge, Eddie McRae, Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic

Thanks Steve. In all reality, I actually built 3 guitars during the challenge time frame....the 2 acoustics and also a custom LP-type that I started on April 7. I used the same finish on the LP as well so I sprayed them all at the same time. This picture doesn't do the finishes any justice at all as...

Re: Bridge Placement Headaches

I'm sure you've noticed that all TOM-style bridges and also most wrap-arounds are mounted at an angle. Just as the saddle slot is angled in acoustic bridges. This is done to allow for intonation differences between each string. Generally speaking, the low (large) E string will be approx. an 1/8"...

Re: $100 Local Materials Challenge, Eddie McRae, Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic

Thanks. I finished up with the spraywork on them a few days ago so after a little cure time, they'll be ready to setup. I decided to go with a 2-tone tobacco-ish burst finish on both of them. I was very happy with how they turned out. This is a pic of one of them.
