Re: MIMF Archtop Guitar Project

Michael Lewis, I am very sorry to hear of your loss. You have been a great help and inspiration over the years I have been part of this forum. I lost my entire shop to bankruptcy a couple years ago, or I would have tried to take on part of this project. But I would just screw the neck on and try to ...

Re: 1st Annual Mountain Acoustics Luthier Invitational

Burnsville has been my home for more than 12 years. I will be teaching a workshop at the festival ("Making Your Guitar Swing"), and a few of my archtops will be on display. I will also be a volunteer for the event. Homeplace has good brews, and the show is in the upstairs of the same build...

Re: New project. Silvertone 672

Looks like a fun project. These old archtops are quite fascinating. I have worked on a few Kay and Harmony models, and their owners always treasure them, even though they are usually a wreck. It is a lot of fun to just bring them even part-way back to life. A few years ago, when I did some fixes on ...

Very nice. Clean and simple. I like the way the sound hole echos the shape and angle of the cutaway "horn".

Re: surface area of bridge contact with guitar top

As usual, Alan has covered some of the relevant theory quite clearly. I can only offer my own experience. 1) Early on, I tried one of the commercial, two-foot bridges. Based on some advice I found here, I added a full-contact, single foot to it, bridging the two feet. Result? More sound. Better soun...

Re: What to do if spruce ever gets rare & pricey...

Guess I'd better get my sassafras (back and sides) and white pine (top) archtop done. Actually, I have done one archtop with a (mostly) white pine top (spruce strip down the center for artistic effect) and it's a gem.

Re: Couple of wood questions from first timer

Greg, With very limited building experience (14 and counting), I'm not sure I can isolate the sound of the wood as opposed to all the other variables I have only tenuous grasp of. That said, I have built two cherry instruments, and both are a little more bright-sounding than most others I have made....

Re: routing neck dovetail question

" I have seen kits with the do email already cut in the heel block."

There's a fun auto-correct, I assume! (do email = dovetail?)

Interesting question, as I find the dovetail jig one of the less stable and most difficult to use of any I have made.
