Re: Completed walnut topped electric

Love it! I love walnut with binding. Great job.

How do you like those pickups? That's the first I've heard of them.

Re: tru oil on neck - rough spot!!

I had to chime in on this about the Tru-Oil, as I've used it on almost every neck I've ever made. Personally I like the feel best with only 2-3 coats. Here's my process: Sand neck as fine as possible, I often go up to 800 or 1000 then gray scotch brite pads. First Tru-Oil coat is quite heavy, really...

Re: New Build, Ebony Topped Semi-Hollow Tele-ish shaped thing.

Thanks Steve!
I ended up selling this one to an old friend of mine who is a fantastic guitarist and plays in bands in the bay area. He flew up to try it and fell in love. Love it when things work out that way, it will be good to have it in the hands of a friend.

Re: New Build Deep Purple

Cool! Finish looks great, and nicely put together.

How do you like the pickups? That's a new maker to me, and it's always cool to learn of new makers.

Cool! Can't wait to see it done. Maybe I'm missing this, but what kind of Poly are you using for the final coats?

Re: New Build, Ebony Topped Semi-Hollow Tele-ish shaped thing.

Thanks Steve!

And thanks for the heads up, I'll have to look into that, though I doubt I'll be doing much more of this kind of binding!

Gordon:

Good old Tru-Oil. Depending on the light it can look semi-gloss or satin. With the varied Portland sun/cloud light I had to wait for the right time to snap some pics so that it wasn't too reflective, or too dull.

Re: New Build, Ebony Topped Semi-Hollow Tele-ish shaped thing.

It's finished up! I'm loving the resonance of this wood combo, and it hardly took any setup to get the action and intonation nearly dead on. Sometimes those things just seem to come together.

Re: Tru-Oil on Maple Fingerboard: next steps

Thanks for the ideas. Gordon, I will definitely check that stuff out. I like Tru-Oil alot, but I'm always on the lookout for something even better. I decided to just wipe on a thin coat for now, without masking the frets, and then just wrapped a clean cloth around my foam sanding pad and rubbed what...

Re: Tru-Oil on Maple Fingerboard: next steps

Oh I did forget to say that I already levelled and polished the frets. I suppose I could just tape off again and remove finish from frets with some 0000 steel wool or white 3m pads?

Tru-Oil on Maple Fingerboard: next steps

I have only used maple fingerboards a couple of times in about 12 years of building. I decided to just sand very fine (up to 1000 grit), and then apply one very thin coat of tru-oil. This looked fine, until I finished the rest of the maple neck, which turned out somewhat more glossy, and now makes t...

Re: Best Glue for Fender-Style Solidbody or Thinline

I've never had issue with Titebond original either. I've even used high quality cyanoacrylate to glue a top to a body and had no problems at all. Only get the good stuff though, from a true hobby (model airplane) style shop, and not the crud from hardware stores. When that stuff first got popular I ...

Here's an update, with soundhole routed, and more of the binding done. I spent about 4 more hours yesterday just on the binding, and it's finally almost done.

Thanks Steve. It is getting the job done, slowly, so I guess it is a technique! Haha. Any brighter ideas are very welcome.

Arg, in my first post I meant "not grown locally", instead of "now". I can't see where to edit.

Re: New Build, Ebony Topped Semi-Hollow Tele-ish shaped thing.

Thanks for the comments folks. Steve, I don't have much of a technique. I basically just set up my bandsaw with the table at about 35 degrees, and marked lines every 3/8", and run a 1/4" thick piece of wood through for about an inch, then cut straight across perpendicular to make my angled...

New Build, Ebony Topped Semi-Hollow Tele-ish shaped thing.

I'm having fun with this one. I found this awesome piece of striped ebony locally here in Portland (obviously now grown locally), just big enough for a bookmatched tele top. This one's got a Honduran mahogany body, heavily chambered, and a birdseye neck and fingerboard, with a mystery hardwood lamin...
