How to get them interested? By doing things with them. Go for walks. Point out the difference between conifers and deciduous trees. Show them rocks. The jagged ones, the layered ones, the sparkly ones… Show them that you are interested in *them*, not just dictating what their interests are going to ...

Maple for saddles is fine, or maple capped with ebony . Upgrading the tuners won't get you much of a tone upgrade, unfortunately. You're better off to replace the cone and spider with a Replogle or a Quarterman. Holding either of those beside a cheap cone will reveal a dramatic difference right away...

You've been given some really good advice. To answer your question specifically, Gibson and PRS, among others, use Western Big Leaf maple, acer macrophyllum.

I would recommend gluing the cap together, then gluing the two plates together. I have not done it the other way around, but when I have looked at the process, I have always thought that I had a better chance of getting things fit and aligned doing it my way.

I can't really tell how bad the wood materials are. You will have to make that decision. I would recommend that you sit on it a while. Some times waiting a while, you will make a better choice. Steve, I have to ask. Just what would you hope to achieve by sitting on it? And how long would you recomm...
