Re: Mujingfang finger planes

I will add that Harbor Freight sells a set of three small wooden planes ( http://www.harborfreight.com/3-piece-micro-brass-plane-set-97545.html ) that I've found to be actually quite good for profiling braces and fine work. They come dipped in lacquer and dull, but they clean up well. The steel hold...

I'm thinking maybe one of these: http://youtu.be/toXNVbvFXyk

Might be tough to find a decent case, though. :-P

...the rope binding was made with sacrificial outside layers glued on with a heat resistant glue. The segments are glued with low temp glue.
Great tip. What glue are you using for the sacrificial layer?

Re: stamps for serial numbers, stamping wood

I designed a small logo brand and had it 3D printed in metal. It works well (once I figured out how to get a clean brand), and it was very cost effective.

Re: replacing missing xylophone tonebars with different ones

I agree that using something other than rosewood would a worthy approach in terms of exploration or to make just playable. It depends on Robert's goals for the project. There are undoubtedly lots of great sounds to be discovered in lesser used species. Whatever wood you choose, some characteristics ...

Re: replacing missing xylophone tonebars with different ones

I used to make marimbas for zimbabwean-style marimba ensembles - I've made about 50 instruments of various sizes, mostly using paduak and mahogany for the keys. Bob is correct. The suspension points should be located at the primary nodes - theoretically about 22% toward the center from either end of...

Re: Mistral project

Nice - I dig the drilled-hole rosette. Bet you'd hate to have the bit wander on you when drilling all those small holes. I wonder how the extra holes affect the resonant frequency of the box or the rigidity in that area?

Re: Advisability of a cheaper model

Speaking as a consumer (not as builder; I'm still far from anything like steady sales), I think it's great when brands I like offer basic/standard/deluxe options of equal build quality. It helps clarify the relative value of the fancier features and makes it easier to match what I want to what I'm w...

Re: Milling machine or drill press?

I ended up buying a decent 17" Rockwell/Delta variable speed drill press from craigslist a few days ago - mid or late 60's I believe. It's very similar to this one: http://vintagemachinery.org/photoindex/detail.aspx?id=10510 . The thing is quite heavy (the base alone might weigh as much as my s...

Any photos of this process? Is this the right kind of stuff, or does it need to be laboratory grade?
