Re: Mystery Guitar Truss Rod Repair

It looks like a U-channel truss rod and the weld has broken at the headstock end. Not sure if you can get it out... Maybe try tapping it with a bolt with a thread just big enough to bite into the aluminum and maybe you can pull it out without having to remove the fretboard. If the dimensions are the...

Re: StewMac Nut Rescue Powder

"Name drop" warning... sorry This stuff is made at Music City Bridge, which is owned by Joe Glaser. When Joe came to train us on the PLEK a few months ago he brought gifts for us. This was included. I've been using it ever since. Is it better? I don't know. It's certainly no worse. One of ...

Re: Fretboard Gluing Question

I just don't even have liquid hide glue in my shop. I think it's pretty good for a lot of furniture or other lower stress wood working applications. But it seems on guitars, there are more ways for it to fail than for it to succeed. I've use titebond for fretboards so far, but I'm getting more comfo...

Re: Burns Gear-O-Matic Truss Rod

It's crazy that I'm finding this now after all these years. I have an old Baldwin 12 string guitar in the shop right now and it has this truss rod. Fortunately it seems to be working just fine. Thanks Barry for posting these pics. I figured there had to be gearing and a worm drive involved, but it's...

Re: Taylor chipped finish

Hi Barry. Yes, I use gluboost all the time and I love it. had this been a "regular" guitar I would have just moved forward with it. but with the value of the guitar and it being brand new and the customer is pretty particular; I really needed to get some perspective. I'm pretty good with g...

Re: Taylor chipped finish

Peter, thanks for that. yes it was snug, more than I was expecting based on previous experiences, but I also didn't feel i had to force it out. you may be right though.

Taylor chipped finish

Hey everyone. I've got a bit of an issue with a Taylor K24ce Builders Edition I have on the bench right now. It was purchased "brand new" online at a store in another state and shipped to my local customer, who then brought it to me for a setup because he felt the action was too high. I ag...

Re: polishing discs silicone scare

Here's what I found for these. Theses have have a knife edge which i hit on some sandpaper real quick to put a more square edge. but they also have discs that come with a sqare edge already which you could groove to match your fret crown. https://www.esslinger.com/silicon-carbide-polishing-wheels-7-...

Re: polishing discs silicone scare

The abrasive will be silicon carbide (no e on the end). Silicon is a mineral element, the main constituent of sand. Silicone (with an e) is some compound of silicon with very different properties. More like rubber than sand. Always check spelling, but as lots of us can't spell, a pretty good test i...

polishing discs silicone scare

I was working at one of our other stores a little while ago and their guitar tech was using these little discs to polish the frets. Looked similar to stewmacs fret polishing discs, but he got these from the guys that to all the brass/woodwind repairs. His frets looked really nice after using them so...

Re: Should I attempt this repair?

Speaking as a "music store repairman," I've also had my fair share of cleaning up a job after an 'interested amateur' in his garage with a router and some epoxy. There are plenty of good repairmen inside music stores and working out of their own shops. They also both have plenty of hacks. ...

Re: Really bugged

Oh that's nasty! I once worked on an old Gibson B-15 that had some sort of bird or something living in it. There was a full on nest and just all kinds of nasty stuff all in there.
I have a J-50 in right now that the first thing I had to do was clean out all the mouse turds.

Re: Neck Joint Database

Yes. I love the discussion this has sparked. This is exactly what I'm talking about. There are so many different neck joints, and then different variations on each of them, even within the same make/models. Now if we had this information collected in one location then the next time someone needs to ...

Neck Joint Database

I'm doing a repair on an 70 era Alvarez guitar (J-200 clone lawsuit) and it's just a total mess. The current owner inherited it from his grandpa who took it upon himself to do a lot of work on it. Probably not the recommended way of doing things, and not something I could ever get away with, but he ...

Re: Gibson LG-0 bridge

Here it is. I finished it and the customer is very happy with their new BRW bridge, courtesy of our very own Barry Daniels. Thanks again for the blank, Barry!

I made the bridge oversized to completely cover the old footprint and then routed the saddle slot after it was glued on.

Re: ? Strength of fiber veneer between fretboard and neck

If you're worried about the fiber not holding you could sandwich a piece of maple veneer between the fretboard and neck. That would be a nice contrast and keep it all wood.
