MIMF

Here's pics of my latest bass.
-obeche/maple/carbon fiber composite body and neck. Neck has 1,5mm and body 1mm carbon fiber skin.
-acrylic impregnated fretboard, 34"scale
-ETS headless tuner/bridge, Hohner/steinberger headpiece
-custom neodymium sidewinder pickup
-acrylic base/colour, 2-part acrylic clear coat
Weight is around 2,85kg.

That's a cool bass indeed. Apparently you've wound the pickup yourself. How's the construction - single or dual coil, rod, button, rod or bar magnets? I've wound some bass pickups with neodymium button and rod magnets myself and can't complain about the sound. Yours has an incredible clarity combined with a powerful low end. No mud, just a lot of balls. Nice!

The pickup is made with neodymium blocks, 5mmx5mmx25. Three blocks are in the coil separated from the transformer core blade with 2mm acrylic pieces. Coil bobbins are from SP-Elektroniikka, magnets are from eBay.uk . Wire is 42AWG. The pickup is quite similar to Q-tuner pickup in construction. Sidewinder construction so it's two-coils laying on their side with steel blade between them. Steel blade senses the strings.

I understand the carbon fiber adds a lot of strenght and resistance to the instrument, but I'm really biased to the natural wood. Your third picture (back of bass in bare wood) makes me want to put some tung oil over it, and go playing. Anyways, that's a great job, and I still like your design very much.

I like wood also. I just can't get the weight and sound that cf allows with woods. I like to do things in a bit out of the usual way. I'm not into rosewood/maple necked alder bodied four string basses. There is enough makers for those already.
