Finished a RR V-style build

Post by Dan Smith »

Maple, Padauk, Ebony.
Neck-through design. Hollow wings, total weight is 6 lbs.
25.3" scale, 14" radius.
Emg 81, Schaller bridge, Grover tuners.
The action is very good.
Clumsy trying to play the thing sitting down.
Dan

Really well done and pretty...

A classical guitar foot rest will help a bit. Although i imagine that a RR would be a lot more difficult to hold with the right lower leg than a normal V.

Although i play Vs for decades (my red one has been played really often; it sounds great despite its looks) i am still looking for an idea how to make a good supporting addon. Something that may hold the guitar in the center of the V and hooks to the left upper leg.

Googling "flying v fold out leg rest" yields a good image of the original solution... seems like the challenge in fabricating one would be keeping the fold-out section thin.

I think I remember someone saying that a Flying V is a rock and roll guitar.
And Rock & Roll should not be played while seated. If you're playing it properly you should not be able to sit!!

Seriously though, that is pretty guitar. Great combination of woods.
I need your help. I can't possibly make all the mistakes myself!

Rock definitely existed in the 50's. Buddy Holly, Elvis, etc., etc.

That is definitely not a Jazz guitar. Those guys are too traditional.

It's got skull knobs, so it will only play rock.
I usually use skull knobs and tell the receipient that if he plays country music on it, it will ruin it.
This design is based on a Randy Rhodes V. I reckon that puts it in the 1990's?
Thanks for the comments guys!

Barry Daniels wrote:... Those guys are too traditional.
That was the reason for the lack of commercial success...

And Dan, Your guitar with only the bridge pickup is clearly a Rock engine...

But it would be fun to see the faces of a linedance group when the musicians were all entering the stage with Vs, wouldn't it?
(Well; You'll definitely have fun on stage if You're playing country with an SG bass, believe, i did it ...)

Well, after a bot of googling i learned that there is actually a genre named "Country-Metal", and it sounds funny...

If the Flying V had come out about 20 years later it might have found a home.

A couple of iconic guitars, Number 7 and Number 1.

The players aren't too shabby either.

Oh, and nice job on yours, Dan. :D
Maybe I can't fix it, but I can fix it so no one can fix it
