New Double Cut

Post by Gordon Bellerose »

Here's my latest. It is a double cut Mahogany, with a fan shaped "insert" for lack of a better word.
It has SD Phat Cats installed. Very nice tone.
This one has a humbucker Tele bridge from GFS.
Maple Maple neck fingerboard.

Hope you like it.

Nice. I need to make a similar tapered lamination out of curly maple for a neck. Do you mind sharing your technique?

First I measured the length and total angle I needed. In my case it was 12 degrees.
As you can see, the outside maple strips, and the center padauk strip are straight, so no effect on angle.
The 4 pieces that are angled are cut at 3 degrees each. I did this on the table saw, using my angle cutting jig.

After cutting them a bit thicker than needed I ran them through the "router table as a jointer" set up I use.
I used a push stick that is the full length of the pieces, so that they would not flex near the thin ends.

Glue up, was a few pieces at a time so that clamping was easier.

Cool! So that fan goes all the way through the body, not just a cap?

Yes. The pieces are the thickness of the body.
Maybe I'll take a pic of the rear.

I like the dramatic contours too.
How thick is the body below the knobs?

It's about 3/16 thick under the knobs. Hope that's what you're asking.
The body is a bit smaller than usual. It's only 12 inches wide inthe lower bout.
It's 1 5/8 thick.

That, my friend, is enough to make me want to build a solid body guitar. That is exactly the kind of innovative artistry that draws me in. Good job well done!

I promised to post a couple more pics, so here they are.

Body rear. The insert goes all the way through. Small tummy cut.

Here's the whole guitar on my deck.

One more pic of the headstock. I fully expect questions.
