I guess this fits in percussion? I figured I would share in case anyone wants to make something similar for their young kids using scraps. My son is three months and he got his first instrument for Christmas this year.
The center is boire that's been hollowed out with a large forstner bit. One side is wenge, the other is eucalyptus. I used the shot from an egg shaker for the rattle part. Works pretty well and easy to hold onto for little hands. So far he is uninterested but I have high hopes!

Thanks, Charlie! Yes, indeed, early and often for music introductions. I play my dulcimer for him every night when I get home from work too. I had to make something as my wife has already knit him a bunch of stuff. I'll catch up when we get into the guitar age!
