17/16 Hammered Dulcimer Build

If it's not a guitar or a bass guitar discussion, and it's got strings, put it here.

17/16 Hammered Dulcimer Build

Post by Kevin Kemp »

I'm currently building my first hammered dulcimer. I'm using the plans from Music Makers (harpkit.com). The back is Baltic birch ply, the rails are walnut, the pin blocks are hard maple and the braces and bridges are also hard maple. Actually, I haven't made the bridges yet. I put a walnut veneer on the pin blocks. The top is 3/8" European? Spruce. The spruce was salvaged from an 1800's piano made in London. The piano I converted into a wine cabinet for my daughter.

I have a photo album on Google Photo of the dulcimer project...

I finished the dulcimer and built a stand this weekend. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. I starting learning to play it this weekend. The photos are updated to show the finished dulcimer.

Thanks.

I just started learning to play the thing. I made a video of Oh Susanna and a practice exercise. I uploaded them to the same photo album. They are at the very end. You can tell me how it sounds :)

I accidentally deleted one of the videos. I reposted it. It just a little practice thing but shows how the lower notes sound.
