Charlie,

Never having participated in one of the site auctions, I am curious as to how it happens.
Can you enlighten me?

Sure. After the auction opens, people may place bids (starting at the minimum stated in the item's description). Whoever has the highest bid when the auction closes wins. The winner pays the MIMF (e.g. via PayPal) and then the item gets shipped to the winner. It should be spelled out in the item description as to who pays for shipping. If the winner is responsible for shipping charges, then that also needs to be paid up front. In the event that something falls through, the item is offered to the next highest bidder. If you have any questions about a particular item, you can PM me or post your question under the item. Hope that helps.
