Hi all,

I have a 74 LP custom, 20th anniversary, and need to replace the neck pick up mounting ring. The ones that are in production now are too thick and touch the strings when they're installed. Does anyone know where to find vintage guitar parts online or where I could find this part specifically or anything that would work for it? I've tried just google searching and haven't had much luck. Thanks!

If the rings are plastic, it seems like they could be sanded.

Gibson "Historic spec" rings might fit better but I know for a fact that Gibson sanded them to fit the tops back in the day. They probably started with flush cut end nippers to get close and then a couple of strokes on a dummy body covered with sandpaper. They didn't waste a lot of time on this and the front rings are just bent over the top willy-nilly and screwed down.

A google search for "M69 rings" will get you closer.

It is normal for a luthier to replace the ring with a tall replacement and then it gets shaped down to fit the guitar and be at the right height for that particular instrument. The likelihood of finding one "off the shelf" that fits is unlikely. In other words, if your not able to do this yourself you should support your local luthier.

Oh wow, is sanding something that an inexperienced guitar repairman could do, or would it be better to leave it to a professional?

If you can file your nails you can probably fit that part.

If you have access to a drum set you can sand on a kick drum side. Water heaters work well too. Typically the neck pickup ring is 30" radius in front, 15" in back while the bridge pickup is 15" radius in front and 20" in back.
