I loves me some maple

Post by Peter Wilcox »

I just got through building 9 Fenderish knockoffs to learn lacquer finishing techniques. I learned it's 99% preparation and sanding and 1% spraying.

On these 3 I used maple over alder on the bodies, and maple necks, and fell in love with maple.

The first is a semi-hollow thinline. I learned that if you burn the maple while routing for the binding, the binding won't cover it up. (Sorry for any dog hair and dust in these pics.)

Second is a strat, non-bookmatched quilted maple on front and back.

Oops, I put this in the wrong forum - can somebody change it to the solid body forum? Thanks.

VERY Nice stuff, even in the wrong forum! I've always wanted a Tele, totally irrational (I play acoustics. Period.), but there it is. Wanna trade that last one for a nice archtop?

Maple is one of the easiest woods to finish. NO grain filling. Just sand and spray.

Good job by the way. Those tops and backs really pop.
I need your help. I can't possibly make all the mistakes myself!

Great looking guitars. Maple and lacquer just go together perfectly I think.

I would if I played guitar - you've made some very nice ones. But if you have a 5 string bass or a nice squareneck resonator...
