Build recommendations for acoustic bass guitar?

Post by Matthew Lau »

About 4-5 years ago, I ran into Dr. John Nosti at a dental implant class in Arizona.
John is a very talented restorative dentist, and a pretty cool guy.
I promised to build him an acoustic bass guitar "someday," as a barter to learn from him.

I'd like to finally get it done in 2017.

Do you have recommendations regarding wood?

I was thinking of doing the following:
- using bear claw sitka spruce for the top (have it from our MIMF sponsor Alaskan Spruce), some
- rosewood back and sides
- old-growth port orford neck blank that I have sitting around.
- a modified Tinozza bass guitar plan (from Luitaio Mottola's page), and using
- Thomasik-Infield acousticore (nylon core) bass guitar strings.
- getting a cheap acoustic bass guitar hard case, and making the instrument to fit the case.
- cello sized perfection peg tuners (been used very well for flamenco guitars and ukuleles.)

I'd like to do;
- fully removable bolt on neck joint; preferably, adjustable
- carbon reinforced neck
- bridge doctor (like breedlove
- pinless bridge (not sure what style)
- MOP inlay based on a Japanese tea scroll motif on grass.

Do you guys have any thoughts/tips?
