Titebond won't set up
I'm sure this has been discussed, but I can't find it anywhere in a search.
We use Titebond in our shop just about every day. Lately though we've had a few problems with it not setting up. A couple weeks ago we glued up 4 Doug Fir boards and the joints failed when running through the planer. Everything else was fine. Then today we glued up some red oak. Put them in the clamps around 7:30. I went back to plane them down around 10:30 and the squeeze out hadn't even formed a skin on top. The glue in the joint was half hard and half soft. I was able to pull the 10 foot long joint apart with my bare hands. I shouldn't be able to do that.
The glue has never been frozen. It's less than a couple months old, probably newer but we can't remember for sure when we got it because we go through a lot of glue. The joints were good and clean and clamped sufficiently. The dehumidifier had shut off and was showing 70% RH, but we've only had the dehumidifier for the last year and successfully glued up thousands of feet with no problems besides one time when we used Elmers. We've used about 3/4 of this gallon and only these two isolated problems. So, what gives? Thanks!

Time to call Franklin and talk to one of their glue techs.
In the meanwhile if RH is that high you might as well switch over to PU.

How Do I Read The Lot Numbers?
Our current lot numbering system is a 10 digit code. The format is:
aymmddbat#. The "a" stands for Made in the U.S.A. The "y" is the last digit of
the year of manufacture. Digits "mm" represent the month, and "dd" represent
the day of the month. The final four digits represent the batch number used for
quality control purposes. Therefore, a product with the lot number A104270023
was manufactured on April 27, 2011.

I hope Ryan's glue is younger than 2011.

Temperature could be an issue...make sure you tell them the temp when you call.
They've been very helpful when I've called in the past.

I don't think 50's is good enough. They ask for 50F on the bottle. I'm sure it will work there but it will take quite a bit longer to set up.

They also ask for 24 hours before any stress on the joint... I've had two or three hour old joints fall apart as recently as today...

All I know is that once I've clamped up joints it becomes very difficult to knock them apart even within minutes. It'd be good to know how much of this is temperature or humidity vs not a well fitted joint vs insufficient clamping pressure.

Just how old IS your glue? have you checked the code yet? it could have sat for a long time before you bought it.

Re: Titebond won't set up
I believe the joints were good and the clamping pressure was sufficient, though I can't be certain since I'm not actually the one that did it, but I don't think those factors would play into the glue remaining wet for hours after being exposed to the open air.David King wrote:All I know is that once I've clamped up joints it becomes very difficult to knock them apart even within minutes. I wasn't in the shop today so I didn't get to check. But we did try doing a glue up today on the job site with a fresh bottle of glue and had the same problem. So did it again and made sure to let it sit inside the warm house and within an hour we had a good solid glue up like we are used to. It has been very rainy, so that combined with the low, but not cold, temperatures seems to not be a good combo for the glue.Mark Swanson wrote:Just how old IS your glue? have you checked the code yet? it could have sat for a long time before you bought it.

Re: Titebond won't set up
I just went to my local hardware store armed with the code:
All of the Original Titebond was from 2014. They are buying it as "new" from their suppliers. When I showed them how to check age they were flabbergasted! And they are going to get NEW Titebond for sale. I live in the Rocky Mtns of Idaho and this is my only local source!

Wow. then I definitely need to check the code. we all should. that is not cool. looks like we need to shop for glue the same way we shop for milk.Stephen Neal Saqui wrote:I just went to my local hardware store armed with the code:
