New bench, where to mount vise

Post by Brian Evans »

A buddy just gave me a european style cabinet makers workbench, the kind that is 5 feet long, 2 1/2 feet wide, a tool crib all along one side, an end vise and a side vise, and all sorts of holes for bench dogs. I will no doubt mount my Stewmac style guitar soft-jaw vise on it, but I wondered where people find it most usefully mounted. I am torn between one end and more in the middle, I see downsides to both (mostly getting in the way of the two bench vises). I guess I could always drill two holes...

Attach it to a block that you can clamp into the end or side vise when needed.

Yup. Put a long carriage-bolt through the bottom of that block, drop it down through one of those dog-holes, and secure with a fender washer and wing-nut.

Move it wherever you want it or remove it entirely as needed.

I drilled two holes; one in the center and one on one end.
I utilize the hole on the end for the fret press also.
I need your help. I can't possibly make all the mistakes myself!

I ended up drilling a hole 1/4 of the way down from the end with the side vise, it's really working out very well so far. I am carving the body bevels into a J-Bass body.
