Recognize this tool?

Postby Doug Shaker » Tue Jan 02, 2018 8:50 pm

I was looking in the bottom of my old guitar-making toolbox (oh, for the days where one tool box could hold them)
and I found this tool.

The mystery tool

- the photo appears to be rotated to the left 90 degrees in the preview, but not when I click on it. Hunh? -

Does anyone recognize it? I'd love to know what it does. Maybe I could actually use it, you know, instead of hoarding it in the bottom of a tool box.

Thanks for any advice or guesses you can give.

Is there a blade or cutter?
When I first saw it before reading the your comment I thought it was a purfling cutter.

No blade. The post nearest the quarter has a sleeve that rotates easily. The knurled knob on the other side is used to move the cross bar back and forth. On the under side, there is a bolt with a flattened head to lock the cross bar in place.

It’s a guide for cutting binding ledges with a router. The crossbar screws to the bottom of a router base. The roller rides against the guitar side. The screw adjusts the depth of cut for the router bit that rides above it.

It is the edge guide that attaches to the bottom of the stewmac precision router base.

That would be the optional edge guide for StewMac's Dremel precision router base for cutting binding channels. See here - http://www.stewmac.com/Luthier_Tools/Tools_by_Job/Tools_for_Binding/Precision_Router_Edge_Guide.html

It is a precision router edge guide for a Dremel base. Mine was designed by Waverly, and sold by StewMac. It attaches to the bottom of the router base with the two hex head bolts and sets the precise offset of the router bit from the side of your instrument, as for cutting binding ledges. StewMac still sells it as part 4324. The 3rd picture down shows how it is used:

EDIT: How many of us can post the same answer simultaneously?

Thanks for the help, folks. I knew it had to be something like that, but I couldn't figure out how it could attach to a router. The missing item of information was that it went with the StewMac Dremel base and screwed into that. Seeing the photos of it in action on the StewMac website brought back memories of using it on a my first dreadnought.

Thanks for everyone's help! I appreciate it.

Anyone who buys a 36 dollar tool and forgets about it is tops in my book.

I'm sure my kids will be able to sell a lot of NIB stuff I bought.

I think it's a Stewmac attachment for the dremel base.
