Paint Thickness Gauge Q's

Post by Robert Freemond »

I'm thinking of refinishing some past builds & would like to know how much finish I left on.
I don't know anything about a Coating Thickness Tester.
I took a quick look and saw that they can be quite expensive & wonder if there isn't a sweet spot
between quality & price.

Robert,

I think there are only two types of non-destructive coating thickness testers. One works over ferrous metals via magnetic principals and the other works via eddy currents over non-ferrous metals.

I've seen electron micrographs of violin varnish taken along the edge of a fissure. It's clearly a problem that needs a solution and maybe we can collectively figure out a way. Probably possible with very high frequency resonance using a piezo crystal or something but I think calibration would always be the hold up.

Thanks, David
Looks like I'll have to find another way.
