Found It!

My shop is getting organized enough that I can start looking at more of my wood stock. I got this hunk of quilted maple from a guy who couldn't pay me for some work I did for him. He offered this in lieu of payment and I hope I didn't seem too excited when I accepted it.

I think it's suitable for a nice guitar some day when I am up to the task.

I think it sort of, you know, maybe looks OK.

It looks pretty good. Nice tight and deep figure. What are the dimensions?

Thanks. It's 23.5" by 9.5" by 3". There's a little checking on one end and it's perfectly flatsawn. I've had it for over 30 years.

Beautiful figure. You could get at least 4 or 5 electric guitar or bass tops from it.

Or you could get one acoustic archtop back from it.

Thanks, that's an idea I would not have thought of. Electric guitars are not my main interest but if someone asked me to build one some day it might be fun.

I was thinking of flat tops but an arch would be beautiful. I don't think I would color that wood in any way. No sunburst either, I wouldn't want to cover up any of that figure. I don't have any quilted maple for the rims. What would be a good option for that?

I am of the camp that believes that the sides should match the back. I am sure you could find a side size board to match it.

I have a lot of quilt and could probably find you a stick that matches for the sides.

A most generous offer! When I feel ready for that wood I will keep this in mind. I'm not using it for my first guitar and I'm not sure when but I want to make at least one acoustic flat top with it.
