Epi Dot Studio -- up close

Post by Alan Peterson »

Has anyone taken a close look at current or recent Epiphone "Dot Studio" guitars? This is the ultra-budget version of the "Dot", which itself is derived from the Casino and the Gibson 335.

The ones with the homogenous brown or "worn cherry" finishes are built with body materials that dont really ... how do I say this? ... feel "real". The Epiphone webpage calls the materials "laminated mahogany", but to my fingertips is more like a plastic laminate with a matte finish. To be honest, I've handled old '60s Kent f-hole guitars that felt more "woodsy" than these instruments.

Anyone know what's being used here?
