2x12 guitar cabinet for Ampeg Reverberocket 50 watt head.

Post by rob bowen »

I've had this very nice Ampeg Reverberocket 50 watt head for about 5 years and have had no cabinet to accompany it, so after looking online at new and used, I decided to build my own. I used to own a Marshall 1936 2x12 which I quite liked, so I decided to follow those dimensions roughly. I sourced out most of my hardware such as handles, corners, jack plate, speaker grills, clamps, and picked it all up locally for well under $100. I ordered a 4x8 sheet of 11/16 birch plywood and had it pre cut to into 5 pieces to make things much easier. I started cutting my box joint corners and my bandsaw decided to snap it's blade. So, I ended up doing all the joints by hand with my coping saw.

I decided to make the front angled baffle removable so I added slender "wedges" to the inside front ... secured by bolts on the outside, and t-nuts on the inside.

I topped the wedges with doorskin, added a support for the back panel, and completed test fitting the hardware.

I lucked out finding a source for the matching tolex on my Ampeg head. This was my first time applying tolex and it really helped reading as much as I could beforehand. I installed 2 new Celestion G12-T speakers. I used quick connectors for the speakers with 18 guage speaker wire. I also built a dolly with casters from leftover plywood. It sounds great.
