Pick ups for 12 string electric

Post by Andrew Armstrong »

Do 12 string electrics have different pick-ups to a 6 string electric. I'm thinking that the pole spacing may need to be a little wider. Appreciate any ideas.

My Ric 360/12 has the same pickups as a 360/6, but the string spacing isn't much wider on the 12.
I think you could go wider at the nut, but keep a 2 1/8" to 2 1/4" string width at the bridge, and the pole spacing would be OK.
There's always the option of blade style polepieces.

There are "trem spaced" buckers that work with Fender's 2 3/16 strat bridges. They come in 49mm and 52mm generally.

Thanks for the replies. I did a bit of searching and I didn't come up with anything that suggests a 12 st electric needs special pups. I guess step 1 is get the bridge and then step 2 is see what the string spread is and how it lines up with pole spread.

I don't know if you'll see this, but the TV Jones Super'Tron has a wide magnet which should work well with a 12. That's what I'm planning to use on one this winter.

Danelectro uses the same pickups for all their guitars - and basses, for that matter. I'm pretty happy with the sound of my Dano 12 string... And the pickups are long enough to accommodate just about any string spacing.
