Greg Robinson's Lap Steel
Hi everyone! I've been away from the forum for quite some time now due to some health issues which are now being managed much better. I thought a great way to get back into swing around here would be to join the challenge! I recently had a new housemate move in with me, a friend of mine who is a CAD...

I'm sure many of us have arbor presses for fretting, that would be a safer alternative to using a drill press.

Keeping the resolution and colour depth high, but increasing the jpg compression works best for photo's (and usually results in the photo keeping good detail). The png format only allows you to reduce file size by reducing the resolution or colour depth due to the lossless compression.

Re: Axstar by Ibanez guitar wiring, need help
I always prefer to run a short wire rather than bending the contact over to the case, you can more easily inspect the quality of the joint, you're more likely to get a good joint as there's less thermal mass, in my opinion it looks tidier, and I've seen a couple of times where the wafer of the pot h...

Hi Luke,
Did you take that photo yourself? We ask that you only post images you made yourself due to copyright concerns.
Thanks.

Hi Chuck,
You might try the jpg format rather than the png you used this time. The lossy compression of jpg preserves more detail in photographs than the lossless compression of png for the same file size. Png is better for text or line art.

Well, about time I checked in here! I would call the project finished - actually, I had it finished before the deadline, but paying work has gotten in the way of posting final photo's and soundclips, I'll get on that ASAP. Thanks Gene, Remember, fully bypassed cathodes don't accentuate bass, they pr...

Re: Axstar by Ibanez guitar wiring, need help
Ok, if it's a 3 way Gibson style toggle switch, I would guess that it's wired with the bridge and neck humbuckers on the toggle switch, with the middle single coil having its own volume control to be blended in with the others (both volume controls would have to be wired for independent operation. S...

Hi Greame, I'm going to weigh in with Joshua, it will never sound like a Strat, but the 4-5-6 positions will be different enough that I think they would be worth it. I haven't used the Freeway switch yet, but I like the concept - it can provide a variety of options while remaining intuitive and simp...

Re: Cheap Piezo Disc PUs
Hi Andrew,
I don't have huge experience using off the shelf piezo disks for instrument pickups, as I usually use complete solutions, but I recommend getting one with as high a resonant frequency as possible, as this will give the flattest frequency response.
Good luck, and let us know how you go!

Hi Eric,
Does it have to be exactly like the original? There are plenty of ways you could wire it up, you can do whatever you want!
Which type of switch does it use? Blade or toggle? This will help us determine what was likely done, or what is possible.

Andrew, how tall is the bridge now, and how high above the soundboard is the saddle? If they are high, you might be able to justify milling them down, but the more usual approach would be a neck reset.

Hmm, interesting Charlie. You only heard the one pop? I assume you inspected the blade for any defects before reinstalling it?
Seems like quite a coincidence!

Hi Robert,
Glad you got it sorted.
Here's a good link for reading capacitor codes. So the values you have are 20nF/0.020uF and 50nF/0.050uF.
You are only able to measure the capacitor values with your multimeter if it has a capacitance range - this would be marked with a capacitor symbol.

Michael Jennings,
I'd agree with Michael Lewis if everything is fitting as well as you say. If you're confident of the fit, use hot hide glue as he suggests. Good luck however you choose to proceed.

Hi Andrew, Millions of Fenders have been made with slab sawn maple, you'll be fine. Remember, it's not stiffness that varies greatly between flat and quarter sawn, it's dimensional stability, that's why quartersawn is preferred in most situations. It seems that somewhere along the line this got conf...

Re: T-Style neck joint problems
Steve, I'd recommend routing the neck pocket to fit the neck you have on hand. Shaving down the neck would probably be a lot more work, and you could mess with the taper if you're not careful.
Good luck either way!
