Re: I Could Really Use Some Help (fretboard to body distance)
As Gordon suggests, get or know your bridge before proceeding. If you're going with a typical hardtail bridge, you might be ok; a TOM is going to need a bit more clearance. If your neck is in plane with the body face (which it sounds like it is), a 1/4" fretboard needs to be about 1/8" abo...

Search the Dingwall D-Bird. Yowza!Chris Richards wrote:Thanks Jason....
I'm learning a lot in a short time and fanned frets could well solve a few problems, good tension for the low B and allow me to move the neck in to the body a bit more...Good idea, I'll be doing some drawings soon..
Thanks

Re: using acetone as a glue for binding
Barry, I'm not definitely sure what kind. I get it from China through Amazon. Most of it is listed as ABS, and a few as celluloid, but I don't have much confidence in that. I've used 6 or 7 different kinds so far, most listed as ABS, and they've all dissolved readily with acetone, even to make the ...

Re: What jack-less endpin for a Sacconi cable?
Wow, so the whole tailpiece came flying off under full string tension?! That must have been spectacular, indeed! I have been using 1/4-20 hex flat head furniture bolts for neck attachment and strap buttons. With your modern looking CF top, I think a piece of industrial looking hardware would fit. If...

Re: 5-String bass, nut and fretboard width.
You could do a 33"-35" multi-scale fretboard to get the length on that low B, and it would look thoroughly badass on a Firebird body, as well.

Re: Finish Help
I've been seeing some pretty cool contrasting grain fills recently, with all sorts of colors being used. Of course, the most common would be black, but white sure looks cool, and I've seen red and even glow in the dark! Mayones has been doing cool stuff. Can't remember where I saw the link, but I ca...

Re: Stewmac Style Neck Jigs
As long as you're setting up instruments with the same or similar dimensions (because the SM version is all sorts of adjustable), the DIY version looks like a great alternative. Here's a question about the neck jig setup: I've read the instructions and seen the video several times, but I've never un...

Re: Bass Guitar Bridge Spacing
BTW: super light tuners are not always good. The mass at the headstock strongly contributes to the tone. On one instrument i had to replace the ultralite tuners (Schallers) back to the old ones (Grovers) because the instrument became uncontrollable at large volume. "Uncontrollable"?! This...

Re: inexpensive spokeshave?
Yes, flat-bottom sole. It allows you to cut facets, and like any plane, depending on your depth of cut, you can hog off a lot of material quickly, or pull off narrow peaks and bring a shape near to final dimensions. I got a curved sole spoke shave (curved front to back), as well, but haven't found i...

Re: inexpensive spokeshave?
I have the basic issue Stanley, and with some time spent leveling the sole, cleaning up the throat and cap, and sharpening it (Scary Sharp!), it works well. Depending on how much folks are looking to spend on you, I'm sure you can find some steps up in quality and cost that will reduce your time spe...

Re: Finally starting a new project: Olive topped offset-SG-something shaped guitar
Thanks Brian. I agree, I keep trying to find some rhyme or reason that certain designs look "right", but I sure don't have enough design or art background to know the whole theory behind it. It seems to be some combination of proportions, "weights", and familiarity to some refer...

I saw that Bare Knuckle posted a pic of an orange 7-string humbucker set a while back on social media (and some green, and purple). You could always shoot them an email and ask who supplies their colored bobbins.

Re: Neck-through construction geometry
Chuck, It's a pretty typical day in a neck-through maker's life. I actually glue the fingerboard on before I glue the body wings on. I then carve away the body part of the neck blank so that the fingerboard top is 3/8 proud of then body top. (Saf-t-Planers are great for this job). I also rough out ...

Damn, only 69! Bill was a fixture around here early on. When I search something in the Old Library, it's hard not to find one of his posts. I didn't know about his career in technology journalism. I just thought he built cool guitars.

If I'm not mistaken, Stephen is describing a zero-clearance "insert" (in this case, overlay) for the bandsaw to avoid jagged, splintered edges on the down side of the cut.

Re: Oregon Guitar Expo, Oct. 23rd, 2016
Yes, I brought three guitars: two 6-strings and a 7. Commission (if it happens) would be for a 7-er, and the sale (sigh, if it happens) is a completed 6. I built a bass, and will build more, but I'm focusing on guitars - 6-, 7-, and 8-string - all with multi-scale arrangements.

Re: Oregon Guitar Expo, Oct. 23rd, 2016
Thanks for checking in, Gordon. This was a good show for me, and just what I needed. Lots of good conversations with show-goers, spreading the multi-scale gospel, and I may have a commission on the way and a followup sale. This is a fairly new show that happens twice a year in the Portland metro are...

Oregon Guitar Expo, Oct. 23rd, 2016
If you're in the Portland area, come on down to the Oregon Guitar Expo today. It's mainly a vintage and collector show, but I'll have a table with a few of my guitars and pickup winder on display.

Re: String spacing HELL
This sounds cool. The interwebs tell me this model has a basswood or alder body. Does your customer want all of the woods to match, or are you going to give him a blingy cap? You still have some of that big chunk of walnut around?
