Re: Opinions on Dust Deputy

Jason, now when I empty the vacuum, it's the upper bucket under the Dust Deputy. The main vacuum chamber usually doesn't have anything in it (except maybe a couple of curls as you described). There's a small amount of fine dust in the filter which I vacuum off.

Re: Opinions on Dust Deputy

I have one installed on a Ridgid vacuum. I waited much too long to buy it. I can go for a long time now (weeks)without emptying the vacuum and cleaning the filter. Before, cleaning the filter was required after a single sanding session (sometimes I use the vacuum on the ROS istead of hooking the san...

I did the conventional HHG repair after my last post. It is still together and doing well almost 4 weeks later. Life is good.

Re: Waterbased Laquer? - Poly? - Acrylic???

I don't know if Target can ship it to Canada. Ask them. I spray with a gravity HVLP gun at around 40 psi with a 1.3mm tip. Once you get the gun dialed in, you can spray a pretty smooth wet coat (but don't look at it past a few seconds after you spray until it dries--it can look pretty rough while it...

Re: Waterbased Laquer? - Poly? - Acrylic???

I have been really happy with Target Coatings EM6000. It's some sort of acrylic. It does burn into itself and makes a pretty good finish.

Won't the SawStop work with a small slotting blade except that the automatic stop feature won't work?

Re: Single-rod dual-action trussrod?

I have never had that problem. My guess is that the wood is able to accommodate that small amount. When it happened on my early guitars with the Titebond or epoxy, the edge wasn't visible but was feelable. Once, and only once, I had a customer who severely dried out his guitar--the fret ends were st...

Re: Single-rod dual-action trussrod?

Just to see it, I ordered one of the Martin dual-action truss rods. It weighs 139 g. I have pulled off the shrink wrap and looked at it. It is threaded only on the adjustment end, welded on the other. So, it's a bit simpler than the Allied rod. It also requires more force to adjust than the Allied r...

Re: Where do you get brace wood?

I've been very successful selecting 2x6 and 2x8 spruce from the lumber yard and splitting braces out of that. I like getting to see the wood before I buy it. There's a lot of waste this way, but it's very cheap waste (that often gets used in non-instrument projects).

You could always turn your own larger pins (if there's room on the bridge for bigger holes).

Re: Materials for jig making.

I have had MDF warp when I cut out one face (like making a dish) and leave the other intact. I had to laminate it to another piece to keep it flat and even then, it pulled in a little. Cutting an outline around it is no problem. I used to use it to make my outside molds. But carving curves of an arc...

Re: Single-rod dual-action trussrod?

You don't have to turn as hard to adjust the Allied rod. You have to turn it more than the LMI rod to achieve the same neck deflection--in other words, it gives a finer adjustment. I use them in most of my guitars.

Re: Redwood top failure?

On second thought, I remembered why I don't use CA in structural roles. I had a plastic to metal repair with CA that lasted 20 years before it spontaneously fell apart. Then there's all that reading about museum curators shunning the stuff because of longevity issues. Some of them report failures wi...

Re: Ebony binding

It probably depends on runout in the wood which you cannot see. In ebony, You can't even see the grain direction. First, make sure that the binding is no thicker than it has to be. I thin my ebony even more for the tight curves (when it bends, some of the thickness comes back), and I use scarf joint...

Re: Redwood top failure?

The top is entirely constructed and attached with hide glue. The fingerboard tongue is attached to the top with Titebond (but with HHG to the neck) so it will come off easily with heat. I will rout off the binding (persimmon), put the body back in the external mold, stick a think blade between the t...

Re: Alternate strings to Dominants?

I've never used anything but the Dominants (with a Pirastro e). Southwest Strings is a little cheaper than most for those strings but they are pricy. If you try the Corelli strings, please let us know how they worked.
