Re: How to check an active pre-amp to see if it is ok?

I would mount it on a board with an old pick up and use a tuning fork (or a screwdriver) in place of a string. You should be able to judge if all the functions are OK.

Re: Bass Tuner Bushings

Suppose you were to fashion some wood bushings. The part that fits within the peghead will need to be thicker than metal bushings because metal is stronger than wood (I do have an incredible grasp of the obvious). If the wood bushings fail, you will then need to bush the holes to hold the convention...

Also, Gibson did not make a "Triumph". Epiphone (pre Gibson) made the Triumph.

Re: Wiring Question

Sorry to be going on, but I didn't want you to think that the second tone control is superfluous. There will indeed be a change in tone if you roll both controls down.

Re: Wiring Question

Scott, I've never tried to isolate the tone controls, so someone else will need to answer that question. People typically use a mini switch (DPDT) for phase reversal and that would be much smaller than the barrel of your tone control. If someone walked into my shop and wanted a phase switch added to...

Re: Wiring Question

I realized as soon as I hit "submit" that I might have been throwing some cold water. Sorry about that. If your bass is setup up for 4 controls, you won't be losing anything by wiring it with two tones and you'll be able to hear what we've been describing. One "experiment" you mi...

Re: Wiring Question

Scott, You cab simplify your wiring (slightly) by tying the outside lugs of the volume controls (the ones going to the jack) together and then tying one to the output. That way you won't have two leads going to the hot side of the jack. Another fine point is the tone controls will bleed highs from t...

Re: Dead transformer

I know this isn't as much fun, but if the mixer manufacturer is still in business, you could see if they will sell you a replacement transformer. That failing, you could try their warranty stations.

Re: Question - Enlarging Hole for Bullet-style Truss-rod Nut

You may not need any thing hard to support the sandpaper. Try rolling a piece of 120 into a tube that will go around the truss rod and not quite fill the access hole. Twist this so the outside end catches the surface you want to lessen. It wont take many turns to ease the space. I've used this metho...

Re: Will rewinding pickups help the sound?

If I may chime in, if these pick-ups are fitted with 4 conductor wire, you could wire the coils in parallel, giving you more highs and less output. Even if they have single conductor leads, it would be easier to fit them with 4C wire than rewinding them. But the individual coils are still overwound....

Re: Martin neck and no body

It's only a Martin if Martin makes the guitar. If you mate it to a Martin kit, it's a Martin kit guitar, commensurate with your skill level. I'm sure someone will mention that if you do build a kit guitar around this neck (with decal and serial #) you should put a note in the guitar explaining what ...

Upgraded Tuning Machines

A customer wants to replace what looks like Gotoh Schaller lookalikes. These are on a Kawai moon guitar (3x3). The guitar has an old Badass bridge/tailpiece so I don't think locking tuners are necessary. Anybody have any feelings about Gotoh/Schaller/Grover/whatever? If ou are not familiar with this...

Re: PAF Classic style PU for An Archtop.

I can't think of any "stock" floating full size humbuckers. The last guitar I can recall with something like this was the Gibson version of the Epiphone Howard Roberts (not the "Fusion"). If I recall correctly, Gibson spot welded/soldered a U shaped bracket to the cover of a stan...

Re: Animal/human figurehead on classic violins?

Here is a link to a youtube interview with Gary Karr. The bass he is using has a lady's head scroll. If I might suggest, surf through the postings of Gary playing. If you aren't familiar with his playing, you're in for something.

Re: Vantage Bass Guitar

Bob, Your bass should be wired like a Fender jazz bass, but with a selector switch. I've tried (in vain) to upload a schematic, but my skills are lacking (Files are too big). Send me a PM and I will send you some diagrams "off line". If time is tight, you may just want to take this to a te...

Re: "Large" On/Off/On switch

That switch is only suitable for guitars with bolt-in necks. But it might be a way to get the instrument to feel more "alive" (if the weather is accomodating).

Re: Brian May wiring schematic

I saw this a while ago and something bothered me. If one were to follow this schematic, when one pick up was turned off, the input to the volume control would be grounded (so no pick up coould be on). I would have the leads from the pick ups going to the center lug of the on/off switch, with the gro...
