Re: locating cuase of buzz/hum.
Are the wires from the pickups either twisted around each other in their way to the pots or shielded? Are all of the signal wires twisted with ground wires in their paths? Are your control cavities shielded?

Re: Replace old ply back with solid wood?
Heat has the potential to delaminate the plywood back. If you still plan to replace it, no problem. If it comes apart, it might be hard to relaminate and reuse.

Re: WANTED: Waterslide decal
When I used to use waterslide decals under EM6000, I would first spray a couple of light coats of rattle can lacquer just over the decal. After that was dry, I would finish as usual with the EM6000. No problems.

A Google search for “custom router bits” turned up a large list of makers.

Re: Getting back to it - Questions re...a fretless bass??
“ you can set the action pretty low because fret buzz is no longer a concern.”—One of the neat things about a fretless and low action is the growl you can get by hitting it just right. Unlike fret buzz, the string hitting on the fingerboard can make a pleasant and interesting sound. Fretless gives y...

Re: Using persimmon
I have built some guitars with persimmon backs and sides. It bent quite easily for me. I have used it for bindings. Again, it bent easily. The wood I had was a bit grayer (or greener depending on how you perceive the tint), but against walnut sides and a redwood top, it made nice binding.

Re: How to fix misplaced bridge?
I’m not sure what I see on the placement in the first picture. Which side of the nut do the pins mark? Regardless of your device, the intonation point on the saddle needs to be twice the distance from the fingerboard edge of the nut plus the compensation. You’ve already got the bridge down and drill...

Thank you. I bought some of that tape when it was first advertised but haven’t played with it yet. I’ll have to remember I have it. Using your description, it could be useful.
Congratulations on bringing back a nice guitar.

It looks great! You’ll need to follow up on your teaser about the CA glue technique. How do you use CA for binding on a finished guitar without wrecking the finish?

Re: Fret leveling… not getting level?!
No, your post was correct. If you put a straightedge on angle across your radius beam, you will see a gap. You can’t make a conical surface that will exactly mate with a cylinder. The string paths taper from the bridge to the nut. For the frets to provide a flat surface under the string path, the fr...

Re: Sanding EM6000
I don’t wet sand EM6000. I’ve been using 3M stickit 320 on a 2” rubber eraser to level after the first 6-8 coats. Then after 6 more coats, I level with 800 stickit in the eraser block, I then hand polish with the LMI FCP polish and then Mezerna 208 polish to final shine. When I really want a shine, ...

Re: Fret leveling… not getting level?!
What Barry said: a flat leveling beam used along the string paths making a conical section fret surface. If the fingerboard was cleanly leveled (a radius beam for that is fine—the differences between the conical section and the cylinder are small), the frets will only barely be touched by the leveli...

My motor is a two speed (1140/1750) salvaged from a washing machine. In this application, I will never use the higher speed.

I don’t think I’d want it to go faster, but this speed seems about right. The dish bearing is a 12” lazy susan bearing. After a year of use, there are many iron filing...

Re: Getting back to it - Questions re...a fretless bass??
I’ve built a couple acoustic 4 string fretless basses with no fret position markers, just the normal side dots moved up to the intonation points. I needed an electric for gig with big feedback issues, so I bought a Fender fretless Jazz Bass (cheaper than building one). It came with the fret slots fi...

The K&K acoustic bass pickup works pretty well. It’s simple. No electronics in the box. Couldn’t be easier.

Re: Wide Tune-O-Matic bridge Source
Thank you. I did buy a set of plans off Ebay. Like you said, they’re not exact, but for my purposes, they are close enough. I’m not trying to build a Gibson— I could buy one of those (but the neck is too small). I’m well aware of the neck width issue. I’m going to make the neck first and build the g...
